I'm heading out to Arches NP for the first time. While I've looked up places to shoot, I would like to know potential dangers in the Park. I heard that mountain lions and other large mammals inhabit the park.
I plan to shoot into the night with the hopes of catching the Milky way and stars.
Mountain lions are very rarely seen in the park. Rattlesnakes are slightly more common. If it's warm out at night, rattlesnakes could be out but they'll usually warn you. But I've shot there countless times in night and day and haven't encountered either. Just one rattlesnake in Canyonlands. Just don't put your hands or feet under rocks. The bigger danger is falling or getting lost while hiking at night. So just be careful with that and try to hike in during the day so you'll better know the way back. Or there's plenty of spots to shoot near the road.
Having been there maybe 4-5 times, including night shooting, I'd second what Grant said. More than worrying about critters you need to make sure you're careful hiking as several of the trails and unique shooting locations are close to steep drop-offs. I may be there next week. Enjoy!
Most people that get themselves in trouble are not informed about proper hydration and bite off more than they can chew on hikes for which they are not in proper condition.

I live in Moab and I get outside a lot. I've seen 3 rattlesnakes in 7 years and 4 mountain lions in the same period of time - but they've all been in town. The advice you've received is sound. Have fun & stay safe!
