Hello, can anyone out there help; I am considering changing from a Canon 1D Mk 3 to a Mk4, second hand of course. The question is, would it be a worthwhile move .I would like the opinions of those who have made the move.

Thanks, Bob.

Better AF, higher ISO in low light & more pixels, 'chalk & cheese', or plan for the future and go for the 1DX.

Far better than the MK3 Bob, but then the MKIV was a massive leap too.....

Great camera. I actually prefered my ISO3200 shots from the mk3 but only if no cropping was involved. MK4 has video too ;)

MK4 is a better camera all round, seriously.

I have two MK4's Bob which I love and they are a significant improvement on the MK3 so you will definately be glad that you made the change if you do. The 1DX is a fantastic piece of kit but it is expensive and full frame against the MK4's 1.3 crop and this may be important to you? I am lucky enough to be able to afford the 1DX but I have decided to stick with the MK4's and have bought the stunning 5DMK3 for my landscape and low light stuff

My further advice would be to stay away from loose women and keep a loo roll in your camera bag:biggrin:

Bob, the IQ is much better in MKIV, plus greater FP selection. Video is good in low light too. If you went with the MKIII then ensure it's after 'The fix' or has had the fix, onlyl very few had a real problem. If you had Custom Functions for a MKIII then finding your way around the MKIV is almost the same, unlike the 1DX, that needs to be properly set up, it's not a camera you just take out the box and snap away in the garden. I now shoot more with my 1DX's than MKIV, plus using the 2x on the 1DX is massively better than the MKIV which hunts, the 1DX locks straight away. If you are not in a hurry and can save, then the 1DX is the way to go, however it's all about budget, usage and what you are doing at the end of the day.

Bob, As a matter of interest I,ve had a Nikon D90, D200,D7000 and a D7100. According to a report I,ve just read the D7100 is an entry level model - so that explains why my stuff is crap

Good advice from Steve there Bob. Unless you cannot afford it I strongly believe that your decision is not whether you stick with your current MK3 but what it is that you are going to change it for:wink:

My other comment would be to consider the 5DmkIII, unless you really need 10fps. It is a great little camera with IQ on par or slightly better than the mkIV. Cropping 1.3x does not get you 16MP (more like 12MP) but I find I mostly do not need to crop at all so I get 22MP images which gives way more leeway for noise reduction and detail enhancement through resizing.
