Still kicking myself :(((((((
Some forum members suggested that i post here for help.
This morning i was photographing frogs around a pond, i just let my 7D+400mm/5.6L on my tripod to look for something in my bag and the tripod fell in the pond !!!
I grabbed my 400mm by the lens hood (the 7D was already fully submerged and the 400mm about half of it's length), unfortunately the Ext. tubes that was between my camera and lens have an too easy release button and the 7D detached as i was getting the kit out of the water and felled a second time in the pond making bubbles as he was sinking in the water !!!
I droved back to my house and opened all the doors and put everything in sealed bags with silical gel, went to the camera store. They said Canon Canada would not repair this and unfortunately my 3 months old kit is dead :((((
The lens didn't get water inside but there is some inside the scale distance window ... will try to dry the lens and see if it's working, but the 7D have water inside and i can see moving water in the top LCD.
Waiting what my insurance will say and take a decision after that !
Now my 7D and 400mm are in a separate container with rice and Silical gel .... will see if the 400mm will dry .
Thanks for any help.
Yikes. Definitely keep lens laying on rice in a container, and change the rice tomorrow, it'll pick up a lot of moisture the first day. Hope insurance doesn't give you the runaround.
Wish you could store your wet gear in my garage here in Phoenix, it'd be dry in 39 minutes.
Insurance should pay you for either repairs or replacement, after your deductible. You'll have to have an authorized dealer take a look at it all and declare it beyond economical repair before they will replace the equipment. I know this because I just recently went swimming the the ocean with 75% of my gear on me. I would send it to canon to be evaluated. I was foolish and had a local company,Metro Camera in Denver, evaluate my equipment and they told the insurance company they could repair some things and then either gave them back to me partially repaired or not touched at all and then after I discovered they hadn't done what they were supposed to do they refused to give me my money back. Unfortunately they are the only authorized repair shop in Colorado and they are taking people's hard earned money for shoddy work. They are BS artists in there. After sending in all the equipment again to their respective companies most of it was declared beyond economical repair and I did get money to replace all of it but my final check came in 5 months after I put the claim in. Just so you know,my insurance company also reimbursed me for equipment that I had to rent from Borrowlenses.com to continue shooting on my vacation. Check your policy or talk to your agent about that. Good luck! I have heard of cameras and lenses coming back from drowning in fresh water!
Sorry about your trouble Debbie, but at least the end is happy!
Looking forward tomorrow to what the insurance company have to say!

Steve--Looks like you are getting some good suggestions. The folks here at NPN are excellent in responding to issues that plague us nature photographers. Lots of rice is the key..............................Jim
Hi Jim,
this morning i looked at my 400mm lens and there is no more water in the scale window, i unscrewed the lens mount to let more air in it. I also opened the back of my 7D and to my surprise there was only some water droplets !!! but there is still water in the LCD on the top of the camera.
Thanks again Jim.
A few years ago I dropped my 7D in a muddy wet field. It did not get full of water but some functions no longer worked after drying. I was told by Canon Canon is Mississauga that they would not replace any parts. It was usable though. Eventually I sent it in to be cleaned only. Now working perfectly.
I did pretty much the same thing a few years back. Dumped my month old D3 & Nikor 300mm f/2.8 in a creek when the bank gave way. After considering suicide, I sent the lens & camera to Nikon repair who advised the D3 was toast & the lens repairable. My rider on my home insurance covered the repair and paid for a new D3. The rider was only purchased 3 weeks before. Hope your outcome is as favorable as mine.
