This is one of the shots from my business trip when I drove up to Salt Lake last October, and made many pit stops, lol. I got this at Zion National Park and have been trying to find out if this formation has a name. This is from a total tourist location, I turned off I-15 onto Kolob Canyon Rd and simply drove in all the way to the end. Right before I did the right-turn twist into the parking lot, I pulled over and shot from the curb, looking SE.
Any idea? Thanks!

Paul, I don't know the name of the formation, but I'd love for you to explain how, if you were shooting towards the SE (presumably near sunrise), the formation seems to be illuminated from the west.
Looks like the formation is part of Timber Top Mountain, the very western end of it in fact, but I can't find anywhere that would say that particular spire is named.
Todd, you nailed it. I did Google Earth and sure enough the flat top mountain is called Timber Top, and the spire is just there for the ride (Map shows the layout). Maybe we'll call it Fred's Spire. There you go. No, I have no idea who Fred is.
Anyway, yes, this was looking SE at SUNSET, sun was behind me to the right. I go there about 5pm and waited until the sun dropped, about 7pm. It was all pretty dull light-wise and I thought it was all going to fizzle, but an isolated storm was sliding west and the setting sun illuminated that storm with this amazing pinkish light, although the version I posted is way too red. I realize I did make it sound like I got there in the morning when I mentioned pit stops, but it takes most of the day to drive from Phoenix, around the Canyon and out towards Zion P. I didn't get to SLC until after midnight but it was worth it. I've just been wondering what that spire was called, and now I know: Fred.
Thanks Les. I do need to tone down the red a little. And I did do a little Orton Effect on the FG trees, thought it smoothed out the scene nicely. Hopefully.

Thanks all!
Great lighting in this shot, BTW!
