Got a chance to visit some of the iconic wildflower locations in the San Juans this week. Camped at the edge of Porphyry Basin and had the whole place to myself for the night and morning. This was a very unusual site this week...a bit of blue sky. A good part of the time I was inside my tent cussing myself for not bringing more DRY socks!
Nice one, Ken! I think if you would crop down some of the sky, it would give more impact to those beautiful chiming bells and stream in the FG. I really like the bottom 2/3 of the frame, and though the poufy clouds are nice, it seems to pull my eyes away from the stream and flowers. This week has been rather moist so hope you got dried out.
Angela..agreed about a 20% crop of sky would do the trick. I'm also seeing a slight exposure issue likely due to processing. The right side (flowers) seems a bit too bright to flow well with the left, darker side of the image, or vise versa.
Thanks for the comments! I have several variations of this image in regard lighting and compostion I can play with, particularly the skies. Within 15 minutes of this image, the entire basin was shrouded IN a cloud. This image was also a grand experiment using a Hoya 9 stop ND filter. I am quite pleased there were no color shifts or other issues. The one exception was some chromatic abberations in the light peaking through the large tree on the right. Cropping out that tree and those distractions would be beneficial for various reasons and would bring more attention to the water and flowers.
This is a beautiful image, Ken. You were blessed not to have any wind during the longish exposure. What Kane notes as an exposure issue appears to me to be an angle of light issue, and it's not really an issue at all to me. Looks quite natural to my eye.
And yes, a crop down to near the top of the cloud on the right would be a big asset. Nice work!
