SInce I was fortunate to secure a Wave permit in early Sept., I will taking a week off to explore some country primarliy in the Vermillion Cliffs area and possilby around Page.
FYI...the vehicle I am entrusitng my safety is a Subaru Forester. No doubt I will try to get into White Pockets. Because of all the warnings I have read on this site about having the appropriate vehicle, I more than likely will rent a Jeep out of Kanab for that portion of the trip.
I did visit Upper and Lower Antelope in April, so I probably will forgo another visiit. But what about Canyon X? I realize its a paid tour, but is it worth it or are their other free canyons that may be just a worthy?

I will say I would not take a Suba to White Pocket. If the road is in great condition it would be okay.. But along the way if someone has been stuck it makes it such an obstacle that I would be afraid of getting stuck. Maybe also check out Stud Horse Point?

Ken, I went to Canyon X some years ago (pre-DSLR ownership). It's a highly convoluted and extremely short canyon. There were maybe 6 of us on the tour and there was plenty of time to photograph that & Cardiac Canyon. No light beams in general. There was a small one that we were told "never" happens. There was one obnoxious person who jumped in front of other photographers & monopolized the leader & in such a small group, she had a large impact. I've actually thought of going back there w/DSLR. I guess it depends on your budget. If $160 isn't a large amount for you for a tour of a slot canyon without many people, then it's worth it If it is, then there are probably better options.

I'd suggest South Coyote Buttes and Wahweap Hoodoos. An area that doesn't get a lot of attention but I enjoyed going to was Yellow Mountain which is up Cottonwood Canyon Road. There are also some other less travelled slot canyons up that road. Check to see if the road is open, when I was there last November the road was closed for repairs. Wire pass and Buckskin Gulch are also options.

If you will be getting a jeep for WP, then pick up a permit in Kanab for SCB and tie the two close locations together. From the Wire Pass trailhead, you might also try hiking down into Buckskin it the forecast is for no monsoon rains upstream. Alstrom Point? Coral Pink Sand Dunes north of Kanab? Hike into Wahweap hoodoos (it may still be rather warm in Sept)? Paria Badlands? Yellow Rock? Martres' book has a plethora of suggestions. Congrats on getting a Wave permit.

Congratulations on scoring a permit!
Another resounding vote for Laurent Martres' books 'Photographing the Southwest-Arizona' and 'Photographing the Southwest-S. Utah'. You'll want 'em both as you're in the borderlands.
Hiring a Jeep for the White Pocket is a capital idea, too!

Thanks so much for the recommendations so far. Yea, I do have both books by Martes and they are fantastic. However, he covers primarily the "hot" spots in Vermilion and not more extensive information (roads, access, etc.) on the rest of the area that would be helpful. I suspect I may have to secure that info in Page or Kanab.
Thanks for the recommendations on Alstrom Pt, Coral Sand Dunes, and Yellow Rock, Doug. All worthy destinations, for sure. Canyon X is still a possibility, so I appreciated your comments Monica. Going there would also allow me some shooting during the middle of the day.

I think that you might get a lot more bang from your buck over Canyon X by visiting Secret Canyon in either a photo tour or as a package with 3 other slot canyons. I have not been there, so you'll have to rely on accounts from that site or via the Web.

Ken, something else to consider is that there just was that big flash flood in Page. I don't know what effects it had or how long the canyons may need to recover e.g. are the walls all muddy after something like that or was there enough cleaner water since to wash them down? Anybody have any experience with being in slots a few months after a flash flood like that?

Round Valley Draw up by Grosvenor Arch is a nice canyon with some down climbing and obstacles, a narrows section, log jam and very few people. The narrows is kind of dark, but besides the greys, there are buff & red colors, too. Subaru accessible.

Back by CB, the Nautilus is a pretty cool feature. Evening shoot to get the pink reflecting off of the interior of the Nautilus. It's about a 10 or 15 minute walk.

Ken: I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned but Horseshoe Bend is only a few minutes south of Page and is well worth a visit. The Wahweap Hoodoos are fascinating. Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch are both worth exploring. If you enjoy camping I would absolutely plan to spend an evening at the overlook above Padre Bay called Ahlstrom Point. Amazing place to camp and catch a sunset. Stop by the gallery to say "hi" if you pass thru Moab en route to destinations south. Have a great trip!
