We’ve all heard the saying that all good things must come to an end, but occasionally some good things just get better. There's no shortage of CNPers that spend a good deal of time traveling outside of Colorado, and no shortage of SWNPers that spend a good deal of time in Colorado. It's also not uncommon for people to post messages simultaneously on CNP and SWNP given that neither our photographic proclivities nor our friendships are constrained by geographical borders.

In that spirit, Adam, Guy, Bret, Scott, Brent and myself have been discussing the idea of merging CNP and SWNP. There is no doubt in our minds that there are a lot of people who identify strongly with one group or the other. In coming to the decision to merge the groups, we didn't discount the emotional tie to the Colorado group or the Southwest group, or the efforts of the groups to market themselves. But given the extent to which many of us move back & forth between the two forums (and the states represented by both), and considering the benefits of a broader-reaching regional forum, we feel that the advantages of merging outweigh any reservations that have been considered. Our goal in merging the two groups is to provide a richer experience for all, bringing together in one forum the collective experiences of a more diverse membership while staying true to our regional focus.

And in that spirit, we are not only merging the two groups, but expanding our regional composition to include Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. It is the reach of the desert southwest and the rocky mountains that defines the focus of our new group. Although expansive in size, the geographical composition still lends us an identity that is focused; it is also unique but complimentary to the other regional NPN groups.

So...now for the implementation. Two big issues are the naming the group and coming up with a logo.

For naming, we'd like to open it up for suggestions. The final naming decision will be made by the group of people named above who are working on the logistics of merging. That is necessary - vs. a public vote - in order to ensure that the group name is consistent with the needs for branding and marketing the group publicly. There are no strict requirements for the name, but a name that reflects the rocky mountain and desert southwest composition is highly desirable. Our goal is to select a name from the submissions by the end of May.

For the logo, we're going to setup a logo-submission contest & vote with the final design being selected by the merged group. We'll set up the contest page once we have a group name defined.

For the time-being, we'll continue with the separate CNP and SWNP forums until we can implement the merge. That will likely take place after a name is selected. There are a lot of details yet to be worked out and more information will be coming shortly. Your thoughts, comments and suggestions would be very helpful in making for a smooth transition.

This announcement is also being posted on CNP [SWNP]. To keep the discussion on one thread, we’ll be locking this announcement thread and you can find the CNP & SWNP Merge Discussion thread here.

Thanks, and here’s to a great new group!
