Taken 9/04/13 in Westchester County, New York. Sorry this is as close as I could get. Thanks, Ray

Looks like a juvenile Purple or Common Gallinule.

Phil is correct. It's a young purple gallinule.

Thanks, Phil and Peter. I didn't expect to see one so far north.

"...didn't expect to see it this far North" (or East...or West...or so early...or so late...)" I've started seeing a few lazuli buntings at my feeders in East River these past few years.
We should be getting used to such thoughts. They are expressed with increasing frequency with reference not only to birds but to arthropods ( "fire ants" since their accidental importation) , plants ("St. Augustine" crabgrass, taiga conifers at the northerly expansion of the "tree line"), vertebrates (cacomistl, armadillo,opossum, manatee), and many spp. of marine life.

Golly gee..makes y'wonder what's behind it all, don't it?
Hey, Honey, shake a leg...gotta fill 'er up. At 8 mpg it sure don't take this ol' R.V.* long t'run through a tankful o'go juice!

* or truck hauling gasohol...
* or tractor harvesting corn for gasohol...
* or metropolis taxi fleet that could run as well on natural gas...
*or coal-fired steam turbines for electricity genration...
* or a Senator paid by big oil to "...drive to visit my constituents in every county" to promote use and production of gasohol and construction of a shale oil pipeline...
*or other such environmentally inane "whatevers"
