Marc won the grand prize at the Environmental Photographer Invitational. Art Wolfe chose his Ocean's Fury image from all the winning images. He won a 30D with lens and some other cool stuff, which I think he got to trade in for a lens he really wanted.
Thanks all. I haven't decided what to do with the prize yet, but I will certainly be taking Art up on his offer to enroll in a week's worth of digital classes or workshop as soon as I can.
The highlight of this evening for me, BY FAR, was meeting Art Wolfe in person. We talked for quite a while later on after things had settled down after I had been introduced to many other photographers heard about or seen online.
Art has truly been one of the most inspirational figures in photography for me, and an idol in life. His adventurous sprit, enthusiasm, charisma and world class talent behind the camera have taken him to the ends of the Earth and back many, many times. I purchased his most recent landscape book, "Edge of the Earth, Corner of the Sky" when it came out years ago but the signed and addressed copy I now have made it worth the trip up there alone.
Sandy, no, the ice picture was not better in print. You never know what the judges from Getty and Corbis will pick. Afterall, they get tired of seeing big and dramatic landscapes I suppose. Art himself has pretty good taste though Quite a few other images up there that really impressed me and didn't get into the winners circle.
John, my winning image (Ocean's Fury) wasn't announced until the reception. The "Art Wolfe" award was supposed to be kept secret. Whether they will put it on the EPI winners page or not at some point I don't know, but it will lead off a spread in PhotoMedia Magazine's Summer issue on the event.
Zack, sorry we didn't meet up later, but Art is a very engaging personality. I wish I could have talked with him for even longer.
Marc,
Hey man, good job and congratulations. Your hard work has paid off. I think you said you put 80,000 miles on your Forester in a year and a half. That kind of speaks for itself.
Congratulation Marc. Well deserved. Yes Art is quite a guy. I shot the sunset on Shuksan in February and we chated for some freezing hours there. One of the images we shot that evening is in the book he jusy sign for you. Once again - congrats.

Kudos to all the folks with images featured there too. There are a lot of spectacular images hanging on those walls.
By the way, there is no mention of his winning on the winner page:

Anybody find a URL for mentioning/showing the winning photo ?
Oh, and anybody else find the winning landscape shot not that great with the oof ice?
And I also agree that the oof ice picture did not impress me at all. hoping it's far better in print! Sandy

(I could have used that 30D as a small upgrade to my 20D but, heck, I have no images that come even close!)
Art Wolfe is a great guy. I met him recently when he was kind enough to be a guest mc for the Youth In Focus charity auction where I'm a board member.

And a new camera to boot. I'm seriously jealous. Are you keepin' the cam?
