My wife and I were thinking of going to the Winter Wings festival in Klamath Falls in February, but by the time we got pet sitting organized all the stuff we were interested in was full. I've been thinking about going down there around that time to shoot the Bald Eagles. I'm sure I can get lots of birding tips on-line, but wondered if anyone has any personal favorite locations for the eagles. I'll post this in the Northwest forum as well.
Thanks,

Hi Dennis,
I have not been there to photograph them but I do know there are blinds on the refuge that you can reserve, some that are specifically good for Bald Eagle photography. Go to the refuge website to find info on them and try to reserve them.

They are usually everywhere about the middle of January to mid February or so. Just drive the Lower Klamath refuge road. The bald eagles tend to congregate in the tall trees along the canal on the West side of the refuge. Watch for mule deer, coyotes, rough-legged hawks, racoons, great-horned owls in the short trees and otters along the canals. The ducks and geese are also amazing. The eagles tend to roost at night in the Bear River part of the refuge which has very limited access. Apparently flyout in the mornings is very impressive if you can get in on a tour. The Tulelake NWR is also a great auto tour, and there is a good chance to spot antelope and mule deer along the road on the Southern side of the refuge near the Lava Beds National Monument, also interesting to visit if you have the time. A lot of raptors will nest, or at least roost along Sheepy Ridge too. There is usually a good variety of waterfowl including swans, geese and ducks of all kinds in all of the refuge areas. The blinds can be reserved if you have the patience and reserve far enough in advance.
