I would like some input on an offer that I received for some prints:
The customer wants to buy 5 prints and the rights to the images that I have on display at a gallery in Chicago. They are 24x36in and 16x24in aluminum prints. Essentially he wants the prints to be (very) limited edition. The buyer would not have rights to reproduce the images.
I know that the idea of limited addition is controversial within the photography community, but this is a fairly substantial amount of money and I am very early in my career as a photographer. I don't know what income I could generate from selling additional prints in the future.
The photos are part of a B&W series of images along the Chicago lake shore. The entire series is on my website: jondainingphotography.com.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Jon,
When you say they want the rights, do you mean that they want to be the only ones with these prints? What about publication, do they want those rights too?

Carl, correct, they would be the only ones with these prints. I would retain publishing rights.

Carl, I just noticed you are from Alaska. I stumbled upon your website a couple months ago (not through NPN) and absolutely love your glacier series. This is some stunning work. It just so happens that my wife and I are moving to Anchorage in April. Perhaps we can meet in person one of these days!
Wondering what you mean...they have ALL print rights to a limited number of prints and NO OTHER prints can ever be made...and you retain publishing rights so you can publish them how?>>>on the internet only?>>>in magazines?>>>on banners (kinda not a print)>>>>sell them to book publishers? It might be helpful to us if you could print out the agreement! Also, how much money are they talking about if you don't mind disclosing?
Troup, sorry for the late reply. The offer was retracted buy the potential customer, who was offering $25k for the rights to 5 images.
I would have been willing to sell them if I retained rights to publish the images in books, magazines, personal promotion, etc. He would have been buying exclusive fine art prints only.
