Watchful Moon
Shot this one last night just a few minutes after sunset from my porch. Its a 560mm image shot with my Canon 6D at 2000 iso, which got me 125 of a sec at F7.1. I had a lot of fun blending this one together. Its been a while since Ive shot the moon, I had forgotten some of the challenges of shooting something so bright and not blowing out the scene. How do you shoot the moon, keeping detail in the moon itself and allowing the glow to lighten up the encompassing clouds. I'ts literally impossible without blending the image. Ive never shot at 560mm so I underestimated how fast the clouds and moon move across your lcd at that length, thus it made it difficult to take multiple exposures to blend later. I finally figured it out and here's the result. Yes I took advantage of the lovely Denver pollution.

Nice work, Kane. It is indeed impossible to get both moon and clouds without some kind of post processing. This one looks both good and natural, so -- good job.

(Do you have a best of '13 coming up, or did I miss it?)

Wow. Love the colors.

Is that a 400 with a 1.4x ? I ask because I am close to ordering the big white 300 and 2x to cover my long end.

Yes, Karl. It's a 400mm 5.6 with 1.4 extender. The lens I am using is actually a friends. I've borrowed it a few times now and I've come to the conclusion it's a fantastic lens that needs to be in my bag. Optically I'm 100% satisfied, in fact I'm a bit blown away with its sharp optics. In fact I'm a bit blown away at its 1200.00 price tag.

An excellent result, Kane. I can only imagine trying to get something cohesive at that focal length with the cloud movement. I think film was much better at shooting the moon. Very well done.

I love the result Kane, it looks very natural and the colors in the clouds really add interest to the image, great work! :toast:
