Cleaning lens contacts

I got a message on my camera today that it couldn't communicate with the lens and I should clean the contacts. With a little playing, I think I've isolated the problem to a teleconverter I was using. Anyone know the best way to clean contacts-don't think I want to use spray contact cleaner around the optics.

Thanks,

You can use a pencil eraser.

When I lived in Maine, I had a balky thermostat and the furnace guy told me to run a dollar bill between the contacts. Worked great. Expect a $50 would work just as well. As an aside, I have Canon gear and was getting the same message. I'd clean the contacts on the lens and the body and would get the message again after a few no problem shots. After several times doing this, I put on another lens and everything worked fine. I tested all the lenses and the problem was confined to that one lens. I sent it in to Canon and got it fixed for $130 but my photo insurance covered it and I had it back in hand in a week. No problems since then and that was a year and a half ago. Bottom line is to check out all of your lenses, etc. to see if it's only one or its more widespread.

agree with a pencil eraser, but be careful not to get any of the bits into the camera. Clean it while holding it upside down and then blow out very well afterwards. There is a great repair place in Sacramento, if needed. Not too far to ship it, if needed.
Good luck -

This is better than an eraser CRC electrical Grade Contact Cleaner I put a little on a q-tip the clean the contacts on the lens plus the mounting ring. You would be surprised at the amount of junk on them

Thanks, everyone. I tried the eraser before getting Myer's note, and it seems to have done the trick-we'll see. However, I think I'll pick up some of that contact cleaner for a reserve. This particular teleconverter has always felt a little "sloppy" for some reason.
