Sunrise/Moonset, Gates of Lodore
I left Erik Stensland's house at 4:40pm last week, and drove to Dinosaur Natl. Monument, where I found my way to the campground at 11:20pm and fell fast asleep. I had hoped for catching the moon in my frames at the Gates, but not having been there before, wasn't sure how things would shake out. When the alarm went off the next morning, I was greeted by this scene of the moon setting right into the canyon. So I popped out of the sleeping bag and headed up the trail, where I spent the next few hours photographing and enjoying the view.

There was also a flock of geese that eventually landed in the Yampa River nearby, and they were very talkative! Their honking and prattling on bounced off the canyon walls, making for quite the cacophony of nature sounds.

Todd,

Nice image and thanks for telling the story behind the picture. Sleep? I'll sleep when I'm dead! Now I'm dyin' to go to Dinosaur!

Did you use a ND grad for this one?

Very peaceful. You managed to do a good job of holding the detail in the shadow area. The moon is a nice touch too!

Todd,
Nice shot. I haven't been up to Dinosaur yet but am hoping to get up there this summer. I will definitely check out this spot.

Todd - I like it. Like many others I have never made it to Dinosaur, it is still on the list of places to go!

Nice one Todd! Several years back in my prephoto days I spent a number of days poking around Dinosauer and then up to the Gates. Your photo is a pleasant reminder of what a nice scene it is. Thanks. Dinosauerr is a fun place to explore.

Seems like we have a bunch of cacophonies here at my work place today, but probably not as copacetic as those in the out-of-doors produced by honking geese.

Todd,

We were at opposite ends of Dinosaur...I camped at Echo Park Saturday night and made this picture of Harding's Hole about 8 a.m. yesterday. Thanks to Darren's excellent "Hot Spots" piece, I was able to cover a lot of ground, but as he says, go there before it gets too hot! It's really nice and green now, although the river is high and muddy.

Good stuff, Rod. I found DK's Hot Spots article very valuable, too. But he's an overall valuable kinda guy.

Nice! The Gates are really impressive in real life but I think it's a difficult location to put on film, I mean sensor!
I haven't come away with anything that I like from my couple of outings there.
