Anyone here ever visited and photographed Coral Pink Sand Dunes SP in Utah? One of my co-workers told me about it today. Wondering if it's worth a side trip next time I'm out that way?

Bob,

There's pretty heavy usage of ORV's there, since it's allowed. Tracks all over the place. You'll need to either [1] work with small details and be willing to look awkward while hiking around with a tripod while 4-wheelers and dune buggies drive around, or [2] go mid-week off-season right after a windstorm.

It's not impossible, but it's tough. If I were traveling through the area during the "regular season", I'd probably pass on it and spend more time elsewhere. Plenty of other great locations nearby.

Hurricane dunes in Hurricane UT are well worth a visit but again they get heavy use from ATV'ers. Mid week should give you a good chance. A friend has a killer pano' from there, the sand is much redder than Coral Pink. You'd need to use Google Earth to find how best to access it though.

My thoughts echo Mark's. We paid a visit last year and I wasn't all that impressed. That said, I have seen some very nice work from the area but I suspect the images were made immediately following a windstorm before ATV's tracked up the area.

I was there last winter right after about 6" of fresh snow. Had the place to myself on a Sunday until almost 10am (much to my surprise & delight). Of course, the dunes weren't pink anymore.

Same experience with the tracks here. I guess if you had a quad you could get out away from the activity.

And more tracks.

Bob, I agree with others' comments about the challenge presented by ORVs, but if you're passing by off season (or right after a good storm), I think it's worth stopping. It can also be a nice place to camp as you're traveling between other locations in the area (Zion, Bryce, Page, etc.). I was there in late September and while there were some ORV tracks there were still some good opportunities. The nearby buttes/mountains make a nice backdrop.

Jared, that's a great shot. Certainly one of the best I've seen from the park.
