I stumbled on to a couple of Pileated Woodpecker creating a cavity in a tree. I watched them dig the cavity and even spotted them taking turns in the tree. For the last week, however, I have not spotted any activity. No woodpeckers moving around and nothing peering out of the cavity opening. Does this mean that the nest has been abandoned? Any thoughts on this subject would be greatly appreciated. I live in the Tampa area of Florida.
If they were actively building, and then nothing for a week - I think something happened. Maybe they found a better site, something chased them off (like an owl that lives in that tree) or one of them perished.
Hope I'm wrong, though - sorry -
