Big Cliff at the End of the Road (+ repost)
Many years ago my parents said Toroweap was a nice place to go if I had the chance. I finally made the drive to the end of that dirt road over Easter weekend. Two nights were spent with pleasant temperatures and some clouds. Other images are in the gallery linked below. As always, your thoughts and recommendations are welcome.

Wonderful, Doug! I am envious of the clouds you had! I was not as lucky. It is a great place, isn't it?

A great place to spend a couple of days.

I really enjoy this unique part of the GC with all the cinder cones and lava flows into the canyon.
Unfortunately, very few GC visitors get to appreciate this volcanic chapter in the canyon's geologic story.

Thanks for sharing your variety of compositions looking west. I also struggle every time with deciding how much foreground to include.

Doug, that sunstar alone was worth the drive. That is a terrific shot. Torroweap is such an incredible place.

Crystal- the sheer drop is inspiring, and the clouds were a plus.
Bill- seeing the lava flows over the edges was neat, but the amount of vertical slip with the fault is amazing. I imagine the fault provided a pathway for the magma release.
Erik- the few gaps in the clouds were indeed in a good place. When I started seeing the rays coming upward, it was cool. Do you think just a little more brightness is needed in the image?

Doug, I personally like this darker feel. You might try bumping the whites up a tad, but not much.

Great capture Doug. I was there 2 years ago and scared to death to get on the ledge for those incredible shots but definitely worth it! :toast:

Wow!
The image you posted here is superb, Doug! Easily the best of the series and one of the more unique solar events I've seen from here. Love that fan of light you captured, and the clouds are mighty fine. I'm a bit surprised that the sheer cliff in the foreground didn't 'catch fire' as it appears that the sunlight kissed it. My only advice might be to brighten that entire area up a bit. The rest of the image appears just right to me. Well 'developed' as usual.
And well worth the arduous drive, eh? This is one of my favorite places to camp. Glad you were finally able to make it and come home with a winner!

*EDIT* A bit of 'Image Polish' really brings out some clarity overall and especially in the depths of the canyon.

Congrats, Doug, on the great image to go with the great conditions. Well done! I had the same thought as John about maybe bumping up the lights on the cliff face; with that gorgeous sunset light I think you could pull out a nice glow from those cliffs.

I've got to make it out there sometime soon.

I, agree, the cliff has a lot of "glow" potential with just a bit more processing.

Ahh....you noticed the fault ! Most people are oblivious.
Yes, the faults were conduits for the lava.

Yea this one is beautiful as is. I love the cooler WB,which adds a touch of cyan to the canyon walls. Congrats on mailing down Toroweap.

Nice work, Doug. The comp works very well, and as Erik noted, that sunstar is fantastic! The toning is very nice. You could pop that wall glow a pinch, but its really fine as is too.

Added some tweaks like a little/tiny overall brightness, saturation and local contrast 5/50/0, and then selected the cliff face for a little more brightness/contrast/sat. Thanks for the feedback.

Nice!

Even on my 2009 Macbook monitor, the adjustments really make the image pop! Cant wait to get on home and see it in the studio.

Yeah, Toroweap is one of those places that will likely give me nightmares long after the trip. I hate unprotected heights! Rico make the trip?

Really beautiful series Doug....like this one best of the group. I just saw the re-post and love it. Excellent job of processing.

Beautiful image Doug, the repost looks great. I like this the best out of the group but also like #8 quite a but, great comp with the foreground rocks and the light is really nice. :toast:
