3 from Moab
I went to Moab for the Easter weekend for a quick trip that was equal parts photography and Jeeping.

CC welcome as always. :)

Pre dawn at Marlboro Point Friday.

Long Shadows at Marlboro Point Sunday morning.

Joshua, my order of preference is 3, 2 then 1. The long shadows and vertical format with the radiating clouds at Marlboro work very well. I wonder if a tiny tad less brightness and more contrast in the lit faces of #3 might help.

#3 is also my favorite. Those clouds and the light are superb!

Great images, particularly #3! Great lines (clouds and shadows) radiating out from the focal point. :toast:

Above Castle Valley is an excellent image. I like the contrasting colors.

Dude, these are all outstanding! Sorry I missed you while you were here. Maybe next time...

Thanks everyone! I was a little concerned with my processing, in particular the "Above Castle Valley" shot, as I had my contrast way too low when I shot it. That one took a little more work than normal to get it looking right.

Bret, I stopped by the galley once, but it was closed at the time. I thought about speeding through town and trying that way. ;)

We may very well have met had you sped through town! Where were you when you made the image of Castle Valley? I can't quite figure it out. I busted out the topo maps and I'm at a loss. No worries if you wanna keep it secret!

Does this help? This combined with Google Earth should get you there. Well that and your hiking boots. Take water.

PS. My elbows were on my knees to steady my cam, I swear my pants aren't this short.

Real nice set here, Joshua. Like the others, #3 is my favorite. Your Castle Valley view was 'developed' near perfectly. And the last one? Well, it's a fine view of what you saw...highwater pants and all!

Josh, nice series! That Above Castle Valley location is now all over the internet. :jump:

I like 3 a lot. But I'll start with #1, its a bit dark on my monitor. Could be a calibration thing, mine, maybe yours, since I'm certain you wouldn't submit this shot as number one...this dark. Looking past that big issue I think the comp and color is spot on. Great shot, very tranquil. Your #2 shot is new to all of us. Thus a mid day image processed well looks great. Lots of comp potential with that area, especially with the river running through the scene.

I think 3 is the best one here. Great subject & conditions, excellent processing, resulting in perfect color. The only nit pick is comp related, I wish for a little more shadow area below the Castles and a tad bit less clouds up high; to get the the well lit castles more centered. Just my 2cents.

Thanks for the feedback John and Kane.

Regarding #1, I left it a little dark as it was a pre dawn shot, but it doesn't look too dark on my screen. I am not calibrated, however, so I could be off here. You can view it on a dark screen on my site, that should make a difference.

Yeah, I debated about even showing the Above Castle Valley shot. I like it well enough, just didn't have time to stick around for a sunset attempt, as my venture out there was on Sunday afternoon and I had to sadly go to work on Monday. But regarding the "newness", I was surprised to see virtually nothing from this location on the web. The good news is the 2.5-3 mile RT hike will eliminate it for 99.9 percent of the population. I definitely want to take another crack at it.

I may have a little different comp from #3 with the elements you talked about, but I did shoot this with the 14-24 and recall that if I went much wider below, the edge of the cliff would start to show. I'll have to take a look. Thanks again!

Josh: That's exactly where I thought it was. I've tried to get out there a couple times but had weather roll in both times and had to turn around. Might make another attempt this year. Thanks!

#3 is my fav too - beautiful set.

Nice set Josh and agree on #3 being the winner and at least your prepared for a flood.

Great set Joshua, number 3 is my favorite, I like the angled comp with the nice light hitting the face, the silhouette of the buttes on the cliff face and those great clouds, you composed that perfectly. And if your pants aren't that short you must just have freakishly long ankles...

Joshua - Are you coming off the offroad trails to the east?

I have shot from there but of course I am usually with a trail group that wants to back in Moab by happy hour - so the light usually sucks. Actually I am not sure I would want to find my way out of there in the dark. I see there is a road from that nearby intersection, maybe gated, from there to about 1.3 miles away.

edit - yeah, of course its those trails,,no good way otherwise.
