This flower finally came up this year, and I have no clue what it is. It has a basal cluster of sword shaped leaves about a foot long. The bloom stem is about 5' tall and the bloom cluster is about 2' long. I'll post a close up in the "larger image" Anyone recognize it?
Dennis : this is a bit gf a guess really but I wonder if it might be Liatris spicata - the Floristan white variety. That has long pointed basal leaves and looks something like your image, though the pink centres may not fit.
Don't know what it is, but I do not believe that it is Liatris spicata (blazing star), as I recall it is one of the few plants that bloom from the top to bottom.
