Two HUGE New Features in the Upcoming Photoshop Announcement

In a little while Adobe will be doing their big press release about the new features in all of the CC products, but for some reason they already posted their videos on YouTube with the new Photoshop changes. I haven't gone through all of them yet but I did spot two that we are gonna really like: the first is actually in Camera Raw... after you pull down a Gradient on your sky to darken it in like a Singh-Ray filter, you can then click the new Brush option and paint out the gradient off of the mountains or whatever else you don't want. Second killer feature lives in Photoshop itself, where you have the ability to create a mask based on focus selection. You know how we create a luminosity mask by selecting the highlights with the CTRL+Click trick on the RGB Channel? (there's actually a small icon at the bottom to do that I discovered) ell, now we'll be able to select pixels based on what's in focus (or what isn't) which means we can create a mask from that. Talk about total control over focus stacking/blending! Birders ought to like that feature, to easily separate out the bokeh area if needed.

I'll hop on later and list the changes if I can once the Adobe Conference is over (you can watch it here if you like!). There are going to be a LOT of Photoshop changes but most of them will be for the design world (Layer Comps, handling fonts, compositing tools, video editing, etc). My gut is that eventually Adobe will incorporate Illustrator into Photoshop and have that one-stop-shopping for design. At that point we'll need a Cray X5 SuperComputer to run it, lol.

As always, thanks for the tips, insights and sneak previews that you provide for us!
These are features worth upgrading for from CS6. Is that $9.95/mo. deal still in effect?

Adobe just announced that the $9.99 plan is now permanent and forever! They said it just 10 minutes ago, awesome. You get Photoshop, Lightroom, Bridge, 20GB of Creative Cloud space, a Behance portfolio website, and a concurrent two-install license! That means you can run Photoshop on your Windows Desktop at the same time you run it on your laptop, not one-or-the-other any longer. And your second install can be Mac if that's your laptop. Pretty amazing. Also, Lightroom Mobile is now totally synced with Creative Cloud, so if you're traveling and you import your images into Lightroom on your iPad, you can rate them with stars and even do edits that are the same exact code as the Desktop Lightroom. Then it all gets uploaded to your Creative Cloud account. When you get home and fire up Lightroom on your Desktop all your work is there waiting for you, ratings and edits. Too bad I don't use Lightroom, lol!

Anyway, all this is 10 bucks a month and you will always always be on the latest version. To me, no brainer. After a year of doing this, I could care less about "owning" it or having the box and DVD somewhere. I have completely drunk the Kool-Aid and love the subscription model.

LightRoom Mobile is pretty cool, but not quite there yet. I'm optimistic that over time, future versions will add more capability. It is really designed to sync from Desktop to iPad. It is done via syncing specified collections. You can create collections on the iPad from Camera Roll (or other iPad Albums) that will be synced up to your desktop, but it really isn't ready for prime time to really use the iPad as the beginning source for images. At this point you can not rate images. You can put a "Pick" flag on images. I'm sure future versions will up that game.

The Develop part of Lightroom mobile contains most of the functions in the "Basic" panel of LightRoom Develop. Very nice and is a great way to visualize a few things.
X-Rite has a mechanism to color calibrate an iPad. At this point, not all applications (like LR Mobile) are able to take advantage so color critical work is still not there on the iPad.

Not bashing LR Mobile. I think it is a great first step. Just didn't want people to get an impression that it could do things that it can't do yet.

It is really designed to sync from Desktop to iPad.

Not anymore, it does exactly the things I listed above. You might want to watch the presentation from this morning.True, the original version of LR Mobile was a "get your feet wet but that's it" version like you stated, but the massive release of all these new Adobe apps this morning, both desktop and mobile, has been the biggest change I've seen yet. LR Mobile and your internet connected PC/Mac now sync in real time. LR Mobile is growing up and now includes the same algorithms for editing (for the ones it has) as the Desktop version. Believe me, I'm not trying to make more of LR Mobile than it is, I don't use ANY Lightroom anything and I could easily go on a rant of how useless I find the software to be as a long time PS user (easy folks, just making a point), but I know there are a lot of shooters who love LR and who shoot on location (we HAVE to, lol!) and if they could cull and rate and do sharpening and contrast edits on an iPad on the field and have all that already done when they get home, that to me is huge. I won't be using LR Mobile but I'm sure a lot of folks here will, it's quite improved. Ultimately if people try it and don't like it, no harm done.

Hi Paul: Thanks for the latest info. I have LR Mobile on my iPad and have used it from the beginning. I just watched the latest from Julianne Kost on the latest updates. Sure enough, rating is now enabled. Develop is still the 'Basic' panel, not all the other features like tone curves, HSL, etc. Good, but not a complete Develop option, but quite useful on the iPad.

Yes, you can create collections that originate on the mobile device and have them sync to the desktop, but that is mostly iPhone, iPad pictures. If you are shooting RAW from a DSLR and want to get those synced via LR Mobile, the amount of space on the iPad is quickly going to become an issue. Just not enough space even with larger capacity iPads. It would be really cool if LR mobile on the iPad could pull the images into it's catalog and sync them to the desktop, but have those images on a wireless drive that had a lot of capacity. If that solution exists today, I'd love to hear about it. Maybe someday. LR Mobile for the iPhone is new. Until today, it was iPad only.

Exciting news! Love that they decided to keep it 9.99...that's a deal with all that you get!! Focus stacking should become much easier after this new masking ability! Yeah!

Just thought I'd add a note here about ACR for CS6 users:

Start CS6 and Check for Updates. There's an update that will bring ACR up to version 8.5.

(Rant) I wish that Adoobie would not leave us CS6 users in the dust. (/end rant)
