Another Bug: What To Do If Camera Raw Doesn't Update to 8.5 When Going to CC 2014

After finally getting the CC collection installed, I noticed I was still on ACR 8.3! Where's 8.5?!? Try as I did, the Creative Cloud system says I'm fully up to date. Typical software release, everything's got a bug. lol. There's a patch by Adobe but it will NOT run, and the Adobe forums are lit up like July 4th over this one.

BUT, I have a fix for this (for Windows users) and it's a little hairy but not too hard. Follow carefully and don't skip a step:

-Quit Photoshop and/or Bridge if running

-Download the direct installer for ACR 8.5 from this site. Just save it to the desktop because we will only be pulling a single file out of it.

-Unzip the file (right-click-->Extract)

-You will now have a Setup folder next to the zip file (you can delete the zip file). Open the Setup folder and then open the "payloads" folder that's inside of it.

-Inside "payloads" you will see more files and folders, especially 3 folders with names that are a mess. You want the folder named "AdobeCameraRaw8.0All-x64-050614143245". Open that.

-In THAT folder you will see another zip file called "Assets1_1.zip". Unzip that file. You'll now have an Assets1_1 folder. Open that.

-In the Assets1_1 folder you will see a single file that just says "1002" for a file name. That file is actually the Camera Raw Plugin. Change the name of that file to Camera Raw.8bi, and be sure to include the space, don't name it CameraRaw.

-OK, now that the ACR file is ready, we need to copy it to its new home. Open this location on your hard drive: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CC\File Formats.

-In there will be the older ACR file. Rename it for now, don't delete it just yet. I would just add OLD to the front of the file name. If your Windows folders are setup to see extensions and you see .8bi in the filename, change that to "old" or anything really just so it isn't 8bi. For instance, I renamed my ACR file "Camera Raw.old" We just don't want it to load into Photoshop anymore while we are setting up the new file.

-Now you can drag the new Camera Raw.8bi that you made from the Setup folder into the location where the Camera Raw file lives (again, C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CC\File Formats). That's it! You should have a new Camera Raw.8bi file and the older one you renamed. Fire up Bridge or Photoshop and you'll have ACR 8.5.

-Once you test ACR 8.5 from Bridge and Photoshop CC 2014 and determine all is well, then you can delete the renamed file. You can also delete that Setup folder mess, all that's not needed any longer.

-Last step: Write Adobe and congratulate them on a smooth, hitch-free software roll-out. :jump:

Paul,

No problems updating ACR to 8.5 in CS6, just in case someone sees your post, but uses CS6
