What are some good sunrise and sunset locations around Vail, Colorado? Shrine Ridge is already on my radar but I'm unsure of other locations. Is Shrine Ridge better in morning or afternoon?

Thanks in advance!

Piney Lake north of Vail is a good sunset spot. Here's a pic: http://www.gcollier.com/Piney-Lake.html

Shrine Ridge can be good sunrise or sunset since there's so many different directions you can face to shoot. It depends a lot on where the best wildflowers are.

Mayflower Gulch is a bit farther from Vail and is probably better at sunset, since the mountains block the sun at sunrise.

The Gore Range has some very nice places if you hike a long ways, but I haven't done that.

Thanks, Grant! Piney Lake looks really nice and your photo of it is fantastic! I'll definitely check out Shrine Ridge and may try to make it over to Mayflower Gulch. Much appreciated. :toast:

Bret, just fyi, Shrine has better light in the afternoon, but this time of year (and especially in the near future) the odds are high for overcast skies at sunset, whereas sunrise will generally be clear--so it's a tradeoff.

Stan good call, and I might add, this is the time of year to endure hazy skies due to wildfires. It seems wildfire smoke makes its way into Colorado every year, regardless if its from our state or another state.

Thanks, Kane and Stan.
