Broke my camera! What to do with it now?
Back in late May, I bought a new Olympus OM-D E-M1 and m-Zuiko 12-40 lens.

Back in July, I was attempting to take some photos from a 4th floor balcony with my camera attached to my tripod.

At least I thought it was on my tripod, but when I went to move it my camera, tumbled over the balcony railing, landing on the deck 40 feet below. (And thank goodness it didn't hit anyone, as there were some people below!)

The polarizer is smashed into the lens which has several broken elements. The LCD has some fine cracks and doesn't work at all. The viewfinder seems to work, but it's hard to tell if it's right. And who knows what the fall did to the innards and sensor, though I can take the lens off the camera as usual so the mount seems OK.

So now I've since replaced my camera, but I'm wondering what to do with the broken one. Would anyone want it for parts or anything?

Ouchies! :frown:

Glad it didn't hit anyone and you got it replaced.

Aside from a multitude of well-chosen epithets hurled at the gods, I would have cried.

I'd send it in for an estimate, but it's likely beyond economical repair. If that's the case, sell it on ebay for parts. There is actually a demand for this.

Dang, it fell 40 feet and still looks that good…? That is one tough camera!

Be artistic and turn it into some sort of a desktop pencil holder, candle base, dry flower vase, garden ornament, desktop lamp base, door stop, fake security camera, spot light. Leave it on top of your car in a parking lot just to see how long till someone runs off with it. Make a fun vid on how not to clean your camera or how not to treat it in the dunes or something equally fun.

Where is Letterman with his top ten uses for a damaged camera…. ?

I'm one of those curious types so I'd take it apart just to see how to do it and see what's inside! Probably the sensible thing instead would be to sell it for parts. Good luck with whatever you do.

I've had several cameras I've managed to destroy over the years. I sold them on eBay for parts. $25 or so is better than nothing.

What the heck....carve out the lens and use it as a pen/pencil holder
