External Monitor for Laptop

I'd like to add an external monitor to my laptop (2011 MacBook Pro) that hopefully would make daylight processing easier when I don't have access to my desktop. (Currently I need to find a darkened room.) I'd like to keep the price around $500 or less, but do like the 2560 x 1440 pixel display. Suggestions and/or experience with brands and reliability will be greatly appreciated.

Dell Ultrasharp 27" model, many recommend it
Or look at Eizo/NEC 24" monitors for better quality for processing but i think it is overpriced.

I don't have a specific monitor recommendation, but I have two NEC monitors (22" P221W and a 27" PA 272W). I think the price point vs. quality of NEC screens makes them a good bet.
