Sunrise at Lost Lake

This was the start of my day that ended up with the sunset shot on Dog Mountain.

No sunrise is ever boring, but this one was not very interesting photographically... so I enjoyed the quiet--it was dead silent-- and puttered around trying different comps to evaluate and come back to reshoot with (hopefully) a more interesting sky. I don't like the hot sky on the left and the hot spot on the mountain, but otherwise the picture was too dark without blending in pieces of another exposure.

This place is still incredible to me, even if it wasn't an ideal sky!

20D, 17-40, little bit of polarizer, remote release, etc...

Oh I forgot to mention--I cloned out several small patches of snow on the far lake shore.

Lovely still image, can't remember seeing the surface of lost lake that still before. My only nit is the branch in the ULC, I would prefer a clean version to accentuate the stillness of teh morning.

Mike,
A classic scene. I think I would like to see a little more color or maybe a conversion to B&W. WHat do you think?

OK, Lost Lake is officially melted...

Nice pic. I would also like a B&W. This looks like it was taken below Observation Point? How's the foliage there? Any flowers yet? I'm hoping to hit the rhododendrons this year.

Thanks, Zach--I think I have a fear of open spaces in my photos--agoraphotophobia?? I think I'll try your suggestion next time I'm out there.

This is my first B&W conversion... I took the blue channel, boosted contrast in levels, applied a warming filter, burned the hot sky on the left, and did a little extra sharpening. There is some banding because I worked from a jpeg..

After that, I worked the color version some more doing pretty much the same thing as on the B&W conversion except: I didn't discard the other color channels, and I applied the warming filter twice. I feel all kind of dirty now, but it's a better image.

Here is the redone color version and a link to the black and white:

Kevin,
This is about 50-100 feet North of the memorial bench (I'm not sure of the names). Rhodies are growing, but just barely getting tiny green buds (this was 1.5 weeks ago...)

I think it would be very bare and graphical if you took out the tree. To me, the tree gives a sense of warmth, not as in warm colors but feeling protected, a feeling of relating to this earth.
My only nits would be how bright it is on the extreme left (might not print up real well) and that I'd like a hair bear more room on the bottom.
Other than that though, I'm pretty much all over it!

For that perspective I like adding the branch - it is a reminder of what is up

I'd like a version without the branch and more color also, but this is very pretty. How long of a drive from Portland ? Is the best way via the I-84 and then South on that road or is the 26 about as fast ? I'm going to try a sunset in early June.

Yeah, Mark, I did crop kind of tight on the bottom. Thanks for the comments.
John, I haven't timed it, but I'd guess about 2-2.5 hours from Portland taking I-84 if you can resist stopping to take pictures along the way or stopping for beer and ice cream in Hood River. If not, give yourself a day's travel

For what it's worth, I figured out the URL tags. The reworked images are much, much better:
Color Rework
B&W (with a touch of tinting) Rework

/mike, the color reworked is really lovely. The B&W is nice also, but the color is really singing to me. One small suggestion would be to remove the tiny bottom branch at the far far left that you only see a small parat of. That would clean the image a bit...... but I love this and look forward to going to Lost Lake soon.
