G H a2m
Another image from my session at Regents Park last week, the Grey Herons are wild, but I class them as accustomed to man (a2m) as the regularly come to bread......

Olympus E-1, 50-200ED at 147mm (294mm equiv), ISO 200, 1/2000s at F3.2. RAW, Av, no exposure adjustment, Multi segment metering. Processed in CS2, 300%,0.3,0 input sharpen, crop to remove excess top portion of image, resize then final web sharpen 100%,0.5,2 convert to sRGB and save to web jpeg

And for John, same image with 100% crops, RAW file re-processed but no resizing crop (gives idea of full image size) and only input sharpening of 300%,0.3,0 - the 100% crop taken into a new file and repasted into the image, then for second crop the 100% file has been passed thro' Noise Ninja with no sharpening before pasting into image.

I quite like this one, Mike. It's dead sharp, my only suggestion would be to up the saturation a little bit. :wavey:

Hi Mike

Nice portrait - must pay a visit the next time I'm in London. I assume it is very difficult to get the whole bird with a natural looking BG!

Cheers Mike - fascinating crops here and in your previous post. I expected the price of the smaller sensor would be increased noise but like you show Noise Ninja handles it very well. When I use Neat Image I always use it selectively with various forms of masking to preserve image info in detailed areas of pic.

The heron pic looks good (perhaps a bit more saturation) with plenty of detail in the beak and head, F3.2 and lots of DOF!. Looks like you have a very portable bit of useful kit.

I think twice about lugging the 300 2.8 around, but the 400 5.6 goes everywhere with me - with nature stuff you never know when opportunity is going to knock. I've always liked the old adage - F8 and be there!

yes but have you seen the size (and price!) of the Oly 150 F2 (300mm equiv)........, in the Pro series they have some rather useful kit all of which is weathered sealed/splashproof, but the cost is silly money when new. (90-250 ED constant F2.8, ie 180-500 F2.8 ED lens - same weight as Canon's 500F4 IS)

I have stopped at the 50-200ED and will now await further bodies to be anounced, I am betting that by Autumn Oly will announce the E-1 replacement (they have dumped all E-1 related stock on a single US supplier) which should have in-body Image stabilisation (like Panasonic or the new Pentax 100D) and a more meaningful sensor pixel density/area of 8 or 10mP

Once they get IS onboard things will certainly hot up!
