Just wanted to post a shout-out to several NPN members whose images were chosen for awards in the 2014 Nature's Best Photography Windland Smith Rice International Awards!
I'm sure most of you are aware this is one of the most prestigious nature photography competitions in the world, attracting some 20,000 entries from 50 countries and a winners list that reads as a veritable who's who in nature photography over the years.
So it's pretty cool that we had HUGE representation this year with a category winner and several other NPN photographers who were highly honored.
I'm afraid I don't know everyone here on NPN so if I leave someone out, please let us know with a post below and I'll update this list as well.
First off, Congrats to Thomas Haney who won the Outdoor Adventure category! Jenaya and I met Thomas at the Awards Ceremony for the 2013 winners at the Smithsonian in November and it was cool to walk through the exhibit with he and his wife (and thanks for taking pictures of Jenaya and I in front of her winning image, Thomas...wish I could be there in November to celebrate again with you!).
Next we gotta say Congrats to Ashleigh Scully who was Highly Honored in the Youth Photographer of the Year award, which is no surprise to those of us who have been watching her photographic skills grow here on NPN the past couple of years! Jenaya and I had the privilege of meeting Ashleigh and her family last month as well, and I don't mind going on record saying we should expect to see Ashleigh recognized in many more of the top competitions in the coming years!
It's no surprise to see Marsel van Oosten's name show up amongst the winners of any of the best competitions in the world, and this year he took a Highly Honored award in the Birds category. Congratulations, Marsel...your photography never fails to inspire us.
And finally as Highly Honored in Wildlife we have Jagdeep Rajput! Jagdeep, your images have been at such a high caliber for many years but I've been more and more in awe of your work over the past couple and it is wonderful to see your photography recognized in this way. Congratulations on being selected in one of the most competitive categories of the awards competition!
Again, please let us know if there are names missing from this list!
It's pretty clear how effective NPN has been in helping nature photographers grow in their skills and abilities and reach new levels in their craft. I can speak firsthand to seeing the mentoring and perspectives here develop the photographers in my own family, and when you see so many members be recognized in a huge competition like this (and others every year), I'd say it's proof positive that we owe a debt of gratitude to Jim and Donna, the moderators here, and each of the members who express appreciation, encouragement and constructive ideas for improvement.
Great way to wrap up 2014, and all the best in your photographic endeavors in the coming year! Speaking of which, the 2015 Windland Smith Rice International Awards Competition opens today, January 1, so head on over to Nature's Best to register and enter some of your best from the past year...and add a few more in the coming couple of months!

Congratulations to Thomas, Ashleigh, Marsel and Jagdeep, well deserved and thanks for giving the entire NPN community a very proud feeling to start the new year. Also a shout out to John for the well written and informative post to bring this to our attention.
John, I for one am amazed and appreciate the time and effort you put into every single one of your comments within this community, they are always personal, thoughtful, sincere, informative and from the heart.
Happy New Year . . .

Congrats to all those great photographers for well-deserved awards!
Thanks John for your kind words! Thanks NPN and all my friends here !
I'm in complete agreement with John about NPN and the community here. BTW it happens to be my 7th win in the Natures Best, over a period of 9 years.
The winning image was shot, while participating as jury member of the live photography competition called Canon Wild Clicks Season 5 with more than 50 participants. Sharing the image here.
Thanks again !
