background music for videos?

What are ways to get background music for videos or short films? I see quite a few of photographers who have posted videos on youtube and the scores can be purchased on iTunes. Does this mean if I purchase from iTune or similar I can use it for any purpose?

Thanks a lot,

Are your videos just for fun, or are they commercial in nature?

I put together video compilations for fun, but I still try to obtain and use all of my music legally. I get it from two sources.

One is Kevin MacLeod's excellent collection, which may be the only one online that's completely free for non-commercial use. I do make occasional donations to his site.

The other is the StackTraxx collection from Digital Juice, which I paid for. I believe this collection is no longer available, but they do have lifetime subscriptions currently on sale that include access to their music archives.

If you can't find what you're looking for there or you need to license music for a commercial project, there are a lot of stock music sites out there.

If you are a Mac user, play with Garageband and make your own. It is pretty easy and fun. Otherwise, Google "royalty free music" there are as many musicians giving their work away as photographers. Just don't steal!

Thanks Max, Loren,
I found Digital Juice interesting. @Loren - If the plan was to steal then why post a query on a forum!
