Folks, I'm planning my first ever trip to Olympic National park in May. I've never been there before, so would really appreciate input on the places to shoot as well as times to shoot these places (sunrise/sunset/all day). I have 3 days to spend there, and while I'm aware that I can't cover the whole park, I'd love to get your recommendations.

Hi Sairam! My suggestion is to take a look at this Outing suggestion. There are great photo locations listed here:

Hi Sairam, I just returned from 2 nights at La Push, Wa …about midway on the coast of the Olympic Peninsula. My wife and I stayed at the Quileute Resort but there are plenty nearby campgrounds and other places to stay in Forks. I like the idea of Forks or La Push as a base for jumping off to a variety of photo options… Rialto Beach ….take the 2 mile hike to the Hole in the Wall and see the many rock outcrops in the shallow waters near the shore which is 20-35 min drive to the trailhead from either La Push or Forks. Second Beach is a good stop too …only a 8/10 mile hike to the ocean along a well maintained trail. Both are good for sunsets…bring a headlamp for the hike out.

If it is pouring rain …you might enjoy the Hoh rainforest…check out the mile long trail of Hall of Mosses… It is about an hour and half drive from La Push. Another alternative in the rain or evening when the sun is not shining through the trees is Sol Duc Falls.

Almost better than the Sol Duc Falls is to go explore upcreek at the first stream crossing only about a 100 yards from the parking lot along the trail….and the second larger stream crossing is a popular photo op. Explore the compositions upstream a bit too. The tall timber in fog and on the hillside would make a cool photo or two. Then you reach the falls after only a short hike. Popular spot….look for the trail that leads to the photo op that is downstream from the bridge. Most folks just shoot from the bridge and from upstream near the split rail fence. Your portfolio is superb! …looking forward to seeing your photos from the trip. Ken S
