We're finalizing our list of forums updates, which will be done in May. Here's what we're planning so far;

1. Increase max photo size to 1600 pixels/1MB

2. Install Lightbox viewer to view the large photo from the 720

3. Allow full size photos in comments using the Lightbox to view the large versions (this is something those who use the Regional Forums have requested).

4. Install the Rich Text editor

5. Some aesthetic tweaks to bring the looks of the forum screens inline with the updated galleries

In regards to number 5, I am considering increasing the height of the topic rows (on the topics index screen ) so that more info can be included (such as the avatar of the OP) to give that screen a more modern look. I will be mocking-up a screen soon and will share it with you in this thread to get your feedback.

In the mean time, please feel free to offer any other suggestions!

The updates sound great Jim!

We're all looking forward to them!

I really like the idea for #5.

I'm new on this site, and probably I find it my favourite (in terms of general tastes and images quality, but not only) .
I read now holy words : the project to permit 1200 px or more uploading/viewing size. This is IMHO very important for the kind of photography here generally presented. Very happy to read about these next update project.
All the best, and thank you for attention,
Sandro

Jim, thank you for the update here and your dedication towards the site upgrades / changes overall.....looking good...!!

Sandro, the new 1600 pixel/1MB limit is already in place in the galleries!
Posted by Sandro Bisotti on April 25, 2015 at 5:53 PM
ok for upload. But now I'm not able to see any photo at the old "larger size" dimensions. I see now only very small (about 700 pixel on longer side). How can I see the 1600 pixel/1MB images? I apologize, only I would like to know if it's a problem of my PC or a decision
of site management (to permit only lower dimensions in galleries, while we can see larger images in "photos of the month").
Thank you much,
sandro

Sandro, click the 720 pixel photo to open the large version.

I'm becoming crazy....I have now downloaded another browser (Opera, I use Firefox or Maxthon) and with this one all seems to go better. Not clicking on thumbnail and on the 720 pixel image (in this way I see the next image, or the previous), but on the title and then on the image. Only in this way (and not with Maxthon browser, that works fine with other image sites) I can see the larger size image. All good what ends good, now I can continue to upload and (more important) to see so many and inspiring images matching my tastes.
I apologize...
All the best,
Sandro

Music.

Allow the poster to upload a link to music that could be heard when his/her image is being displayed.

This is probably technically impossible but if it could be done that would be a really big deal. Perhaps provide a link that would let you bring up a separate window that plays the intended piece while you look at the image in the original window.

Music is fine...as long as I have the choice of whether or not to listen to it.

There was a Web fad a few years ago where all kinds of sites had music that would play when opening the site. Honestly, I found it extremely annoying.

The mock-up screens are complete - bear in mind they are NOT functional, only serve to illustrate the updated looks. I welcome your comments!

New Forum Topics Screen

New Forums Comments Screen

Revised Gallery Comments Screen

We hope to have these live in the next week or so!

Hi Jim,

I like all three. The font in the replies on the Forums and Gallery Comments looks a little strong, but that could be changed in the editor, I assume.

Edit: In the existing forums topic screen, the title is prominent. In your mock up, the only way I know which forum I'm viewing is the statement in the header stating who the moderator is: "NPN Discussion Forum Moderator: Jim Erhardt "

The look is clean in all three.

Nice work, and thanks for your efforts!

Edit: I just noticed that the text in the footer of the existing gallery and forums is very difficult to read: It's black on a dark brown background.

Preston, thanks for the feedback!

Footer - hit refresh, I made some changes to the style sheet to accommodate Safari's inconsistent rendering of font size.

The new updates are great Jim - very refreshing.

Jim: Hope this hasn't been brought up somewhere else and it is a small point but is there a way to make SCAYT your default for commenting on the gallery entries? Sometimes the connection between brain and fingers doesn't work so well for me and I've gotten used to SCAYT on the old comments format. If there is no way to make SCAYT the default I can sure live with that because everything else is SO MUCH better.

Bill,

For those of us with only two remaining brain cells, with one showing smoke, what is SCAYT?

LOL @ Preston, I had to Google that too.....

Spell Check As You Type, which looks like an option we can enable with the rich text editor. We're installing the next round of site updates this week so SCAYT is on the list.

Round 2 of the site updates are now live!  If you encounter any bugs or have any questions, please report/ask them below.

Round 2 update highlights;

  • New styling consistent with IC galleries
  • Rich Text editor
  • Lightbox viewer for photos
  • Maximum image file size same as IC galleries (1600 pixels/1MB max)
  • Ability to post max size photos in replies

Also, Spell Check As You Type is an option that you can enable in the spell check menu (ABC with checkmark icon)

We hope these latest updates enhance your enjoyment of the site!
