Round 2 of the site updates are now (mostly) complete!

Round 2 update highlights;

  • New styling consistent with IC galleries
  • Rich Text editor
  • Lightbox viewer for photos
  • Maximum image file size same as IC galleries (1600 pixels/1MB max)
  • Ability to post max size photos in replies

Also, Spell Check As You Type is an option that you can enable in the spell check menu (ABC with checkmark icon).

Over the next few weeks there will be some minor tweaks and additions to updates already done. If you encounter any bugs or have any questions, please report/ask them below.

The next round of updates, slated to be done in a few months, will focus on PhotoPortfolios.net.  Here is what we have planned so far for Round 3;

  • A new graphics package to resemble the look of NPN
  • Better cross navigation between the two sites
  • A single log-in/registration for both sites

The overall goal is to better tie NPN and PhotoPortfolios into a more cohesive package.

As always, your feedback and suggestions are appreciated!

Demo of the new large photo capability of the updated forum software;

  • Maximum file upload size is 1600 pixels/1MB
  • "Intermediate" 720-pixel photo (the one that appears with your post) is automatically generated
  • Clicking the 720 opens your original file - completely unaltered with no compression to browser limit - in the Lightbox Viewer.  Note that the software will downsize a photo to fit the viewer's browser window.
  • Maximum size files can be uploaded/posted in replies

The photo I have uploaded in this post was sized to 1380 X 920 pixels to fit my browser window (1920 X 1200 screen res) with no downsizing. In the vast majority of cases, the limit for no downsizing will be hit on the vertical dimension first, the software downsizing the photo to about 87% of the available space.

Please feel free to upload a "large photo" in a response below and check it out for yourself!

After the Round 1 Update I have lost the alerts of the spell checker. Is this a general change or it's just me? For foreigner members it's very usefull.

Gigi, in the menu section of the Rich Text Editor you will find the spell check feature.   A full user's manual for the Rich Text Editor can be accessed vai the ? icon.

Let us know if we can be of any further assistance!

Hi Jim,

I tested a portion of your newest updated by posting a full size image in the reply section of my most recent hummingbird post.  I was limited to 500mb as maximum file size.  When I click on the image  found in the reply, it takes me back to the large view of my original post.

I like what you have done so far, the larger versions and layout help show the impressive images that are posted better than before.  Thank youcrying............................JIm

Looks good, Jim!

I do have a suggestion...

In the 'Post a Topic' or 'Post a Photo' screen, add a "Cancel' button that would take the user back to the topics listing screen or the thumbnails page.

Not a big deal, but it might be helpful.

Jim, I think you found a bug.  We'll get it squashed ASAP....thanks for pointing it out!

Jim, I've run into an item a couple times now and not sure if it is an issue or just me. The gallery comment area does not do it, but the newer forum area does.

When leaving any comment and additional paragraphs and information especially on a cut and paste it seems to lose the ability to condense the lines together. Not sure I'm explaining things right. But if you need to back lines up in the comment by using the backspace key at times they will not. If you look at this thread I left a comment to Anil and it will not condense the information using the backspace key?.... ........in fact it's doing on this one jsut trying to leave this message.

Paul, I was able to correct your response in Anil's thread using the delete key, but the one you posted before this one was beyond repair! Something weird is going on with the way your messages are getting formatted and I had to copy it into Notepad to remove all formatting and paste it above as a quote.

Are you typing the message first in a word processing program?

Jim, no I'm not doing that. However, I am cutting and pasting certain things. For instance, I just now cut and pasted your question above. When I go to paste it, it comes up with a dialog box stating my browser security setting will not allow cut & paste and I must paste it into the dialog box shown, which I then do. So, I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. I'm sure I did that with the one for Anil's thread.

I'll remember to sure the delete key too. In the paste I would always just use the backspace key and I think that seems to work OK in gallery comments, maybe not. Thanks for checking.

I just now noticed it's when I go back to edit things go haywire and it jsut keeps moving things downward........wink
