I've thought for a while that it could be both fun and instructive to see how different members would process the same image and the variety of results that we'd get.  I'd be happy to email a raw file to anyone interested in participating.  I think this should be done in the Members Lounge to keep it a member's benefit.  Hopefully holding it there would also encourage members to describe some (or all) of the processing that they did.  Anyone interested?

Fun and Educational . . .
It will never work ! enlightened
What a great idea and should be very entertaining also, how will it work ?

Mark,

RAW files are generally pretty large files and many e-mail clients will not accept files that large. Secondly, most e-mail inboxes have size limits on them which could get filled up by large files plus regular messages.

In order to cirumvent this issue, there would have to be an FTP account and folder that images could be uploaded to and then downloaded from. Jim or DtP could set this up. Each paid NPN member could then access the folder. The upload would be similar to how we already upload our images for display here. To download, a member would have to select a file from the folder list

I like the idea and think it would work. It could be fun.

Mark, I like this idea.  It could really bring out some processing ideas that are both educational and entertaining.

I like the idea Mark but agree with Preston that we would need an alternate way to download the image.

We can upload it to the NPN server and place a link to it in the Member Lounge.

Mark, feel free to send the file to editor@naturephotographers.net

Jim,  I tried and my outgoing mail server blocked the file as too large (its 26 MB as a DNG file).  I'm looking into FTP sites...

Mark,
You can also send large Raw Files via Drop-Box - www.dropbox.com

Mike, thanks, it looks like Dropbox will do fine.

All: A link has been posted in the Members Lounge.

I have been following Mark's "Processing Event Thread" in the Lounge. There are several workups of Mark's RAW file that are very interesting, and most of the workups have the processsing steps included. It's very cool to see the different realizations of the image, so I encourage you to check it out.

I think Mark's idea has great potential as a learning vehicle. So, if you have an image that you'd like to see how others would process it, I encourage you to take provide one. To do that, upload your image to DropBox where others can download it.

Have fun while learning something new!

PS: Jim, if this takes off, is there a way where members could upload via FTP a RAW file to NPN's server directly and have the image available for download? Just a thought.
