Thoughts About Processing Event

I have some thoughts about Mark's "Processing Event"--

I think it would be better to post re-works of a member's original file to the OP's thread. That way, all the related images would be in one place.

Another thought...

DNG and 'camera RAW' files are proprietary image formats. Therefore, unless someone has compatible image editing software, they cannot open the files for editing.

I humbly suggest that RAW files be saved as uncompressed TIF, or a high quality JPEG, and then uploaded to Drop Box. Both of these file types are standard image file types that can be read by most all software.

To make Mark's idea more educational, I think it's important to outline the processing steps, especially if it's something unique, or somewhat complex.

I'm on the fence with screen shots and/or videos. Any thoughts on this?

I think Mark's idea is exellent, and could be very educational, as well as inspirational.

Preston,  I was under the impression that DNG was to be an open format that "everyone" had.  If that's not the case, folks should say so and I'll be happy to convert the raw file to an uncompressed TIF and upload again.  I have doubts about JPG since it's often limited to 8 bits.  At this point, I consider this to be a test run, so we'll learn as we go about how to make this work conveniently for all.

I like the single thread idea.  How about having the first reworked version post in a new thread with others following.  That would let my original thread be limited to problems, ideas, improvements, etc.  An alternative would be to post version to my original thread and use this thread as the problems, ideas, etc. thread.

While RAW formats are somewhat proprietary, anyone using LightRoom or Adobe Camera Raw can open virtually any RAW file from any camera manufacturer.  I'm going to guess that covers  a large majority of people.  I'm sure other RAW processing engines out there can read a large variety of RAW formats.  The obvious exeptions will be those who use Canon DPP or Nikon's proprietary software to deal with images.  Yes, there will be exceptions, but to convert to a TIF is a mistake.  That is the whole purpose of RAW processing.  If the goal is education about the processing workflow, it all starts with RAW image editing which have more flexibility than an uncompressed TIF.  If someone really can't open a specific manufacturer's RAW file, then they can convert it to a DNG via Adobe's free DNG converter.  I agree with Mark about the thought of using a JPEG because the format only supports 8 bit files in all but JPEG 2000 format, and in either case it is a lossy compression.

Keith, you make a very good argument. I'm in agreement.

Thanks for your comment!
