Two weeks ago my 7D went in for a much needed sensor cleaning along with repair of my 100-400mm L (the latter of which developed a freaky shutter click sound when pulling back the zoom). They estimated two weeks, which worked with my long Labor Day plans.
After 2 weeks, they say they need another week and a half, so I thought about renting a 5diii for a week (all my lenses but a sigma wide are EF L series anyway).
Well renting costs 800, so I looked at used 5d mkii's...not bad...about 1100-1400. And not just for a week!!!
Well, then BH came up with a new 5dmiii with Pixma for just 2149 after rebates!
So now I'm thinking about getting a 5diii and selling the Pixma printer, until I read the "lowest" consumer reviews and heard about mode dials falling off and hideous noise issues or nr detail loss . So I checked DP Review amd image quality issues are mainly in jpegs...I think, and they liked the build quality so I'm thinking low reviews were just idiots and ham hands, right?
Anyone here unhappy with their 5d III? Is it so bad they switched to the 5d S?
If I keep thinking about my options, that dang 1.5 week wait will pass, and I will have spent all my time online reaearching instead if shooting anyway ;-).

I have no idea what reviews you were reading about the 5D Mark III. Clearly from people who bought the camera and don't have a clue how to use it. The 5D Mark III is a superb camera. Solid build, great image quality, excellent low light performance, great AF system, and on, and on. Quite simply a very versatile camera. I've had mine since very shortly after it was released. The 5DS looks to be a nice camera as well, but you better be prepared to deal with massive files and need the resolution for some purpose .
Thanks, Keith. I hadn't heard anything bad until I read the reviews on B+H, and I always sort by lowest first for a product that I know to be generally well-received. Mode dial knobs popping off (two customers) shocked me!

The 5DIII is an excellent camera. About the only thing you may miss is the "crop factor" if you're big on needing to get closer with some of your wildlife or bird photography, but generally it's a far superior camera than the 7D across the board.
Thanks, Max. I might keep the 7D for wildlife, but if I can crop to gain the +.6 and still have a better quality image (especially at higher ISOs), then the 7D might become obsolete in my bag...except for that dang on-board flash.

Here's another vote for the 5Diii. Until the 7Dii came out, a lot of bird photographers were using the 5Diii, particularly in lower light situations. Great camera. It's still my go-to for everything but birds.
It's coming Thursday. Let's hope the furnace lasts through the winter ;-).

The mode dial 'popped' off my 6D as well. Not the entire dial but the plate on the dial that shows the different modes. I simply use the info menu to show me what mode the mode dial has dialed me in. The plate is glued on and can come off easily.
I would consider the 5DS if you can afford it. I think many will be upgrading to get a D800 quality landscape as positive comments start coming in .
Good to know, Igor. I already ordered the 5diii. It was a steal (in my mind) at $2149 with a canon pixma 100 13x19 printer, paper, a case, a card, and an extra battery. $3800 would have been too hard to justify (and then there is the new computer to handle the file storage of 50 mp images)
Maybe if I turn pro I can justify that. Then again, if I turn pro, I won't be able to afford anything ;-).
