Yes!
I have heard this "rumor" from various sources, and two of them are very reliable. It should be an "unified" 1 series camera, with FF 22 mp sensor and fast as the 1D. It will have a new AF module, too.
It is still no clear what type of sensor it uses - it may still be a bayer-type CMOS, but Canon is developing a new sensor "similar to Foveon"...
The price should be lower than the current 1Ds, but higher than the 1DN - I guess something near $5000. It is likely that the 1DN will remain in production for some time after the introduction of the new 1D, to offer a "cheaper alternative."
I really look forward to this SLR to make the jump to 1 series
Rumours, rumours, rumours... I'm reminded of a line by Sheryl Crow - "It's not about getting what you want...it's about wanting what you got". Remember that when all is said and done and the camera that tucks you in at night and sings you a song on your birthday finally comes out, it will still be the nut looking through the viewfinder that makes the photo. Enjoy the technology (I do too) but remember even a pinhole camera can be a mighty powerful tool in the hands of a talented photographer.
This is going to happen and probably this fall or winter. I look forward to the new system and I hope that it comes in at a price less that the 1DS MK2. If it does I'll have one for sure because 22MP's is the magic number for me. THat will be a camera that I will hold on to for a long time for this should put the camera in the 6x7cm + range of quality! As for resolving power, probably more than the lenses but more MP's means less rezzing-up of images means bigger high-quality prints. Once Canon comes out with this then they need to focus on some new lenses with more resolving power and the word is out about that also. Lenses beyond the "L" series is the word.
This is getting downright serious! We're among a host of people harboring MF gear and waiting for the prices of MF backs to drop to 35mm rates. That's not happening nearly as quickly as sensors are improving on 35mm. Easy math, but at present I could buy a couple of the new bodies at the forecast price along with a whole fleet of Canon's best lenses, but still save money over the cost of a single MF back. If the manufacturers don't get their heads out of the sand soon, there'll be a wing of dinosaur museums just for MF gear.
Some lenses can resolve *way* more than 22 megapixels....a 22 MP camera has the same pixel pitch of a 8 MP 1.6x camera, as the 30D and the 350D....so if your lens is able to "resolve" the 8 MP sensor of the 20/30/350D, it is able to resolve also a 22 MP FF, at least in the center.
The main problem is with wide angle lenses - the easily resolve a 22 MP sensor in the center, but they get worse towards the edges. I guess that Canon will announce some new wide angle lenses with the new camera, too (my guess: 24-70 f/2.8 L IS and 14-28 f/2.8 L IS)
Call me crazy, but I'd rather see a 1DMK2N type body with 1.3 crop factor witht eh fast frame rate and large buffer and about 12-13 MP than a 22 MP FF. I don't shoot that many landscape shots, so the MF performance is not what I need. Perhaps the digital world will now segregate into the 35mm size capture medium and the MF size capture medium just like the film world did years ago.
Now I'm really disappointed I was hoping for a 222 mp camera with at least 30 frames per second. Then I could get rid of all these big lenses and shoot with a fisheye out of the sunroof of my car and then pull the bird portraits out later on my computer.
It's coming! I just hope it will not be long! Hey Prashant, you want first dibs on the 5D? Now, if I can get Canon to make me a new set of TS-E lenses with new up to date coatings and better resolving power. Damn, that would be SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!
If it's in the $5000 range, I will have to step up and get one also at some point. I trashed my 5D last week (I fell into a river and was carried downstream) and am likely buying a new one of those now for the Summer. Maybe I'll look into renting a camera until the new 1-series is released. Hmmm........
Scratch that idea. Has anyone seen how expensive it is to rent cameras?!!! $185/day for a 1Ds2. Maybe I can find one to lease somewhere. Maybe I'll just have to buy both.
Homeowners dosen't cover it because I am a working professional photographer. I would need a seperate policy through my business account. I've been told some policies are different.... I haven't looked into it much yet though.
I have been awaiting a repair estimate from Canon, which came just minutes ago. Great news too! Only $1300 to fix the body and refurbish/calibrate the lens. Better than $4000, that's for sure. So I guess I'll start looking at adding a policy today to cover my business assets. The D30 I won two weeks ago should almost offest my repair bill. More $ savings left for that 22-mp beast!
Hey Doug, I don't thing you took a swim with it did you? Man, I heard that Arca Swiss makes a good boat anchor, any truth to that? Good thing you only go caught out in a rain storm. Anyway, Marc went skinny-dippin with his 5D. I told him that he was a little infatuated with his new girl Right Marc? HEHEHE Glad you're ok and that it's fixable!

The "$" series?

1] The new "unified 1" camera has an option for less mp and faster fps?
2] They put out a 1.6 sensor camera with better AF and other advanced features?
3] The 1D2N goes on indefinitely?

Marc...I got my Arca Swiss soaked in the Hoh Rain Forest. Just took it to the motel, put it by the heater and dried it out.
