Last Saturday, I tagged along on a field trip with Woodland Park HS teacher Josh Tracy and his photo club. Josh showed the students some of his favorite shooting spots in the park. It was pretty neat watching the students as they tried to be creative in capturing the soft light on the rock formations.
As we were leaving the area west of South Gateway Rock, I noticed light bouncing back on the west-facing formation from the adjacent rock wall. I must have a thing about dead trees...anyway I figured this scene was a gift I gratefully accepted.
While the composition doesn't have a very solid base, there's just enough of a mystery to make it interesting.
I think your self-critique is right on Ken - lot's of positives here with the rock, color and the graphic quality of the tree; a more well-defined foreground would definitely help out though.
I like the idea Ken. Whenever I'm in GOG, I enjoy the juxtapostion of the trees against the red rock background. Something about the idea of these trees making a go of it, often rooted only in small crevices, appeals to me.
