This gorgeous lady is a female Emperor Moth Pavonia pavonia - our only native representative of the silkmoth family and despite running a mercury vapour moth trap regularly, she flew in through the bedroom window! The males are smaller and reddish and fly by day.

D70 180 macro f22 1/60 fill flash and diffuser. ISO 400.

Hi Clive,

Very nicely exposed with superb colours. I really like the composition. Those "eyes" on the wings are fantastic.

I'm looking at trying for Swallowtail butterflies, I'm sure your the man to point me in the right direction Clive

Speak soon

I'm planning a trip for Swallowtails myself soon - I'll email you!

Cheers,

PS There's a macro of the wing in the macro gallery

Thanks David - I set it to -1.7 (I think) after a few experiments and chimping the histogram!
