Hi all! Just wanted to share that three young NPN photographers were awarded in the Por el Planeta awards tonight! If you're not familiar with Por el Planeta, this is the innaugural year in what promises to be a significant competition completely dedicated to conservation. The competition saw over 28,000 entries from 88 countries, and had a veritable who's who of conservation photographers and nature photography players on the judging panel including Paul Nicklen, Cristina Mittermeier, Brian Skerry, Kathy Moran and Sophie Stafford amongst others.

The big news of the night is that our very own Ashleigh Scully won the 10 to 13 year old category with her beautiful image of an Eastern Screech Owl in a sycamore tree! Here's the Facebook post from Por el Planeta on Ashleigh's win. She was also awarded 2nd place as well as a few Honorable Mentions! Ashleigh's screech owl also received a Highly Honoured in the 2015 Nature's Best Windland Smith Rice International Awards and will be on exhibit in the Smithsonian beginning Nov 12.

My young wildlife photographer son, Josiah, was also awarded in this category with his image of a snowy owl on a weathered old fence in the midst of a prairie snowstorm. Por el Planeta hasn't posted a gallery of the awarded images yet, but here's the image with the story behind it on our website.

Jenaya's image, Owls in the Wind, also received an Honorable Mention in the highly-contested 14-17 age group. The winning image from David Rosenzweig was a powerful environmental photojournalism frame showing a wildlife worker chainsawing off the horn of a rhino to protect it from poachers. Jenaya was also awarded in this year's Nature's Best awards for her image of four Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep rams (a species at risk) stepping out in formation.

Obviously I've got a case of proud-dad syndrome, but I think it's so cool that these three young photographers have been significantly mentored and shaped in their skills and journey here on NPN through the comments and critiques of the community here.

Congratulations to all!  Seeing the images these young people produce and volunteering with young Americorp people on conservation projects keeps me optimistic about the future of this planet.
