New LARGE PHOTO Feature!

Based on some conversation here, some have found that the Lightbox script we use to display the large photo (by clicking the 720 sized photo) doesn't always display the large version at full resolution.  This is because the script resizes the large photo to fit in the browser window on smaller monitors.

We have added another way to view the large photo: under the 720 photo on the comments screen, you will now see a small icon that opens up the large photo at full resolution in a new tab/window. Since the large photo opens at full resolution, scrolling will usually be required on all but the largest monitors, but you will be able to see all the detail in the photo. Thus we call this new feature Detail View.

So now there are two ways to view the large photo: the Lightbox viewer by clicking the 720 photo itself (auto-sized to fit the browser window), or Detail View using the icon under the 720 to open it up at full resolution in a new window/tab, regardless of monitor resolution. If no icon appears under the 720, then no large version of the photo was uploaded.

We hope you enjoy this latest tweak!

devil......Jim, this worked very well on several images I looked at just now. Thank you for having this optional feature added to the already various viewing choices. Works for me...!!

Wow!

I just tried this on my Ruby-crowned Kinglet post and it is awesome!

I don't think I"ve have noticed the new icon or understood what it was for without your Heads Up here/

I hadn't seen this note about the viewing method. I discovered it when I was making comments in the Landscape Gallery.

I like it! devil

Thanks for the added feature, Jim!

WOW, Ditto, OMG Wow, what a huge difference this makes!   The size and sharpness now show as they are intended - and yes, smaller monitors, laptops, etc. will have to scroll, etc., but at least now we can enjoy the details.  I checked my images and boy, what a difference.

for those that want a great example of what a difference this is, check out Marylynne's recent dune image.  there are little critter tracks in there I hadn't seen before.

Great job! Thanks Jim!

Jim,
I am travelling and only have my Android tablet with me. Based on what I can see on this small screen this feature is truly awesome. Can't wait to get back home and check the images on my good monitor. In my view, this is a massive improvement to the NPN experience. THANKS!

Thanks for the new feaure Jim.  It seems to be working great with horizontal images but there is something strange going on with the vertical images in the avian gallery.  On several vertical images it has reversed the sizing, that is if I click on the link title, a larger image is shown and then if I click on the image again I get the smaller 720 pixel version rather than the reverse as it is supposed to work.  Also what is supposed to be the normal version (should be 720 pixels) but is actually the size of the larger image that I posted looks to be softer than the actual 900 pixel larger image that I posted.  Below is the link to my photo

Nate, when you click either the thumbnail or the 720 on the comments screen, the Lightbox Viewer opens the photo and resizes the photo to fit the browser window.  In the case of vertical photos, it's not unsual that the resized photo in the Lightbox Viewer is actually smaller than the 720.  When you click the icon under the 720, the full size (large) photo is displayed just as it was uploaded.

It appears all is working as intended.

Jim,

I am back home and finally had a chance to look at some of the images with the new large photo feature. This is truly outstanding. I think that this new feature could become a powerful tool to attract new members. The image quality is actually better than in some famous sites that will remain unnamed....
Thanks again!!!
