I'm sure most of you have heard the news coming from Nikon this week, but just in case you hadn't and are interested in such things, more than 7 years after the introduction of the wildly popular D300 we in the Nikon fold finally have its successor (or at least a March date for its arrival).

There's about a thousand commentaries available online already so there's not much for me to say here other than it sure looks to be a very impressive body, well thought-out and built and ideal for wildlife photography. It boasts an unprecedented 153 point AF system, native ISO from 100 to 51,200, 10fps with a buffer sufficient for 200 compressed RAW frames at that rate (or about 79 uncompressed I think), tilting touch screen, bluetooth and wifi connectivity, magnesium body where it matters most, weather sealing, dual SD (one XQD) slots, 4K video, and much more. I must admit that I had long ago given up on such a body coming from Nikon, so this is a pleasant surprise, even if the timing is brutal for those of us in Canada with the current exchange rates. Nikon US has it priced at $1999 for the body and Nikon Canada at $2699. Of course some of us can't live without the vertical grip/battery attachment, so add another $300 or more for that!

Here's the scoop highlighting all the features from the Nikon US site (click the tab at the beginning to view the tech spec list): http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/dslr-cameras/d500.html

Of course Nikon also introduced its new flagship DSLR, the D5, on Tuesday, but we all knew that one was coming! ;) Pretty impressive feature list to be sure: http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/dslr-cameras/d5.html

I've been pretty successful at avoiding the gear-focus and must-have-the-latest-and-greatest midset in my photography thus far, but this (the D500) really looks to be the system I've been hoping for since my D300's got a little long in the tooth and I moved to full frame. Anyway, thought I'd share the news!

John, I hope the D500 works out very well for you and other wildlife photographers and birders.  It does look impressive.

John,

What would you use as a commander for fill flash since the D500 doesn't have a pop-up flash?
