The power of Google...Not surprising most replies to this question referred to tipping being reserved for low paid employees and never a sole proprietor. However, I've been on a few guided flyfishing outings and the guide is always tipped...usually quite well.... some worked for guide services but others were independent guides and it made no difference. I've attended only one photo workshop and did not tip. I didn't see anyone else tipping but wasn't really paying much attention.

I've never been on a photo workshop. Tipping staff on guided river trips has been a standard thing forever from my experience.
If you are quite happy with the workshop, I would absolutely tip! If it was mediocre, then probably not. I have a lot of friends who run workshops and they work their tails off from well before dawn til late into the night. I think that effort should be rewarded IF you like results. Like waiting tables, it is a service industry.
I have hired fly fishing guides numerous times and if I was treated well (whether or not we got into fish), I generously tipped. I have never done a photo workshop, but concept is kind of the same in my book.
Standard practice is generally tip employees but not proprietor across the majority of tourism and similar service industries.

I haven't seen any workshop operator's chime in on this, but I've read descriptions of a lot of the exotic tours and they mention tipping local guides. The don't mention the tour leader.

I've given a few private photo tours and sometimes been tipped, sometimes not (about 50-50). I don't expect it, but It is most definitely appreciated.
I've also been on quite a few group tours of other types (travel, fishing, river rafting, etc.) and almost invariably members of the group tipped the guide, even if s/he was the proprietor.
