So far the fire has not threatened any structures and is burning south of any part of the refuge normally accessible to the public. Salt Cedar is fueling a large part of the fire, also some Cottonwood trees. The refuge manager actually started creating fire breaks 3 years ago in an effort to deal with a fire. That planning is certainly paying off now. I received an update from the refuge this morning as I'm involved in a lot of activities with the refuge and will be teaching for the Festival of the Cranes in November. Fingers crossed that the work being done to contain the fire continues well.
