I posted this in the RMNP forum as well but wanted to solicit your advice as well. My wife and I are going to reprise a trip to Jasper and Banff the first two weeks of September. Its been seven years since our first and only trip and I'm looking to maximize our experience. Is there likely to be much fall color that early and if so where are the best opportunities? Is the Elk rut likely to have started and are there preferred locations for that? We're both old enough that 10 mile hikes are in our history books but we can still get around pretty well and can handle shorter day hikes. Any and all suggestions are most welcome. Thanks in advance. >=))>

Bill, I'm sorry no one has responded.  I'd love to help but it's still on my list of places to see.  Good luck and have a great trip!

Bill, trying hard to remember, but there are some really nice stands of aspen along some of the rivers that may start giving some colors about the time you are there. Try the Bow River Parkway. Also, in some of the higher areas above tree line some of the low growing ground covers turn bright red and may be really nice offset against the glaciers and snow up high. There are also some nice Aspen in the Bow Lake area and the aquamarine water is amazing there much like Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. Depending on time of day, I have seen some really nice late afternoon/evening light in some of the sweeping grassy valleys along the Kootenay Highway and around Emerald Lake in Yoho NP. The Trans-Canada Highway just above Golden, BC, Radium Hot Springs and the area just north of the Athabasca Glacier/Icefields Center are a few fairly reliable spots for Bighorn sheep also if you are interested. Of course, this from a person who has been there five times in all... With two weeks, you will have lots of time to explore and there is no way to go wrong in that area.
