There will be a total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. The path will cross the United States. Start planning, kids!
For area of greatest duration (near Carbondale, Ill.), according to NASA and Fred Espenak, a partial eclipse will begin at 16:52 UT (12:52pm ET), with the total eclipse beginning at 18:20 UT and ending at 18:23 UT. The length of the total eclipse will be 160 seconds.

Thanks for the notification and links, Preston. Looks like a better chance for the Northwest in August than it was last time at the end of February (not known for clear skies out here).

Best chance for clear skies on August 21 is in southern Idaho. Duration is about 20 seconds shorter the then longest total duration in the center of the country. I have been waiting for this for about 20 years now hard to believe it's only a year away.
hotel rooms in Idaho falls are all booked, we had a block of 10 rooms at the la Quinta they were going for $299/night. Can you say rip off. Any way shameless plug. We have a workshop scheduled in the area that week. We will be going to Yellowstone and Craters of the Moon National monument. As well as viewing the eclipse. This will be a small work shop 6 students and 2 instructors. We have rented a house in a gated community on the water. From this location we can go several directions the day of the Eclipse. Check out workshop here
the he next US eclipse will be in 2021 and head from the northeast, southwest to Texas. In NY Syracuse, Rochester will be in the total path.
I hope everyone gets to se this event. This one should be spectacular

Well, I wont be trusting climatology. I'm gonna start my forecast about a month ahead and as I get within one week, I'll hone in on my target...
