Nettle Weevil
Nettle Weevil Phyllobius pomaceus

20D, 180/3.5 + 12mm ext + 1.4x, ISO100, 1/25 @ f14 (effective), Benbo 1 + BH1 + Manfrotto focusing rail, C1pro + CS2.

Hi,

Almost positive on my ID here, plant and location etc were all correct, just waiting for full confirmation.

Taken whilst chasing Scorpion Flies, these weevils are approx 8mm in total length and are normally found on nettles (hence the name) which seem rather abundant this year. Although not fast moving they are very rarely still which ruled out a focus stack, so stopped down to just about the diffraction limit for the pixel pitch of the 20D, would still like a shade more DoF.

All the best

Definately a nettle weevil! Have photograhed them many times in the past while chasing wolf spiders... in nettles. Like the pose here with the elongated legs. They are tiny, but in the right light (or with a whisper of flash) they shine like small jewels. Very nice Phil. :toast:

Hello Phil
Great macro work with super detail. Would it look a little better without the dark area BRHS?
Best wishes

Hi Phil,
An excellent close-up with a great angle and the subject just the right size in the frame, for my taste.
Pleased you posted this as I was also photographing one of these a couple of days ago but wasn't sure of it's identity, now I know  .

Hi Phil

An excellent macro shot with fantastic detail and colour. Only minor nit is the dark area lower right hand side is a bit of a distraction but other than that this is a top notch close-up.

Good work :toast:

cheers

Fine shot Phil. I've often seen these on nettles and wondered what they were. Yes they never seem to stop. I like the angle of the shot but the head looks to be just on edge of the dof - perhaps a touch more usm just around the eye area may help.
