Large portrait mode option

A certain percentage of images are posted in portrait mode.  Unfortunately, even in the large detailed view, the resulting image is not large enough to really evaluate properly.  Many of us currently have monitors that easily flip to vertical for text or portrait mode images.  Would it be possible to program a larger portrait  mode image option for the galleries to accommodate these monitors?
