We are in Hawaii for a couple weeks. Just got the D800 back from the clean-and-repair shop, and all my settings are gone - re-set to default, even though I asked them not to.
Does anyone know the setting to focus on the CLOSEST object in the frame? Albatrosses and frigates everywhere and the wind makes it really tough to focus.

Thanks to anyone who replies!

Sandy

Sorry to hear about this. I can't say what that setting might be and don't recognize it from any Nikon I've owned. Is this something from one of the setup menu options (like a5, etc.), or something you might have set from a switch (like (AF S, AF C, 3d, etc.)? Have you checked the manual? If you don't have it with you you can download it from the Nikonusa web site as a pdf file. OR if you have an iPad there's an app from Nikon called ManualViewer - I keep a copy of the manuals for my bodies and even my old SB-800 flash so they are always available in the field.

Finally, you can save all your custom camera settings to a file on a memory card and then read them back into the camera if something happens to them (like the camera being factory reset during service).

Try this link from Ken Rockwell.

Sandy:

I'm not a Nikon shooter, but I have the D800 PDF manual because of work I've done with clients.  I searched and didn't find anything obvious. On page 49 of the manual it talked about Face Priority AF where the camera will focus on the closest subject.

I'm sure you could Google the D800 manual and download a pdf to help you figure out the setting.

Okay, but we all want to know now.... what is this mysterious setting of which you speak?
