A partial eclipse will be visible in most parts of the US.
The total eclipse will occur in a large swath across the US from coast to coast  - I'm heading to the Salem, OR area  for the closest spot to us.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/nation-now/2017/02/15/big-one-total-solar-eclipse-six-months/97954500/

and here is a link to show the exact swath thru the US from Oregon to the East Coast:

To view the eclipse, it is imperative to use "eclipse" glasses - available for a few dollars on the above site links.

To photograph the eclipse, you will need a solar filter from links at these sites - from about $60-several hundred.
Lots of online tutorials to read to learn how.

Thanks. Sounds like Newport, OR is the place to be. More than a minute of darkness.  Of course you take your chances that it will be viewable that being the coast. Salem sounds like a good place. I may be at Long Beach, WA then so could easily drive to Newport if weather looks good. Thanks, again.

The part of the shadow that first touches the lUS  occurs at Newport, OR  (the last motel rooms are like $2000/nite if you can even find one within 75 miles) but  I don't care about that - just want good totality images and being farther inland is fine.

Photography sounds very tricky from the sites I'm reading, so it will be a challenge. Lots to learn. Plus the special glasses and solar filter for the camera lens...

Good to know about the motel rooms in Newport Sandy. We were thinking about trying to get over there for the eclipse. Guess we will have to stage out of Hood River where our son and daughter in law live now. We will probably head down toward Madras area.

Spent 2 hours tryng to find a room anywhere in the totality zone in Oregon and finally nabbed maybe the last one i Albany. Sure wish I still had my motor home!!

The motels are being scalpers -  rooms going for $2000 or more per night.

Be sure and check the totality times for your particular area; I think the partial eclipse starts around 915am   and the whole thing  is over by about 1015. Will post other useful sites here, as I find them.

The weather on the coast may do us in, as it can be cloudy any time of the year in oregon.    Be prepared to move further east. We have an alternative room 200 miles east if needed.

I will be heading out to Oregon as well for the eclipse. We could only find a hotel just south of Portland, so it looks like we'll be driving. Planning on the Mount Jefferson area or east into the desert if the weather doesn't cooperate.

I found this 8"x8" solar filter sheet from Thousand Oaks Optical on Amazon for 17.99. I'll cut it down to fit my Lee filter holder.

Craig, this sounds great - bu i wonder if it is photographer-quality. I think maybe the polymer might have blips and defects in it that might wreck a photo. might be safer to use a photography filter of glass.  At least try it out well beforehand on some full moon shots. You are way younger than me - but this is the last total solar eclipse in my lifetime, and i don't want to screw photos up because i was too cheap to buy a $50 filter.
my opinion only !
