Between last summer's fires and this winter's epic rainfall, anyone planning on a trip to California's Big Sur should be aware that access and services are likely to be severely impacted for the foreseeable future. See for example this article:
The roads are likely to be in bad shape for quite a while.

We found that out over Martin Luther King Weekend in January D.A. Tried to run down Highway 1 from Monterey home to So Cal. Nothing doing. It was shut down just above Big Sur. Tough road to keep open.

A timely post, Dave.
I'm working my way back home to Oregon after a month in Baja, Mexico, trying to find the easiest route. Hwy 395 on the eastern side of the Sierras (my favorite route) promises lots of snow and freezing temperatures. CalTrans reports say high winds in central California, then lots of snow in the Mt. Shasta region.
I opted for the coast route, but see that Hwy 1 has multiple closures in the Big Sur area due to slides.. Still looks like 101 (but not Hwy 1) is the best option for back to the SD/LA area.
