ODD Chrome issue

I'm thinking this is specific to me, but an odd behavior started just recently for me.

In Chrome Version 57.0.2987.110 (64-bit), after opening any gallery, discussion page or post within, after a few minutes, all of a sudden the vertical scroll feature using my mouse freezes and doesn't work any longer.  I have to close the page and re-open in a new tab or window.

Of course the immediate reaction would be to check the mouse, battery, etc.  However, I can immediate go to ANY other page (my email, Google, FM, wait, I don't go there...) and the vertical scrolling works as expected.  I also open in MS Edge and don't experience the behavior.

This just started within the last week or so.  I'm wondering a couple things: 1. Has anyone else experienced this?  and/or 2. Were there any code, Java or any updates to NPN recently?

Just curious. Baffled and annoyed in Livermore.

Lon, are you referring to the scroll wheel on your mouse, or the vertical scroll bar of the window, or both? Do you get any error messages such as, 'This page is not responding', or anything like that?

It appears that scrolling using either method in MS Edge and Firefox work fine.

I would think that if there was a long running Java Script on NPN, that would potentially affect all browsers.

If any of you NPNers experience this issue, please post here, and provide the text of any error messages, if any. Thanks,

As mentioned Firefox ssems fine. How about using the arrow keys up and down? It might isolate it to the mouse or not if they work OK.

Thanks Preston, Paul,

Only issue with the wheel scrolling.  Click-drag on the scroll bar itself works fine. It's only the wheel and not receiving any error messages and nothing is hanging.  Just stops working.

Of course, now that I've posted this I can't reproduce the problem.  It's been a couple hours and usually I was seeing the problem in just a few minutes...

Oh well, never mind.

Apparently intermittent. Hung up again. All other controls for scrolling work including arrows and paging keys.

grrrr

As a ex-telephone-man, I can tell you there was nothing worse then "intermittent" problems. The problems that were "constant" always got repaired. Yes, even the "intermittent" ones got resolved eventually but usually at the expense of much lost sleep.......cheeky

Maybe Lon's mouse needs a cat to scare it into working properly, or...his mouse needs training wheels. sad

Sounds like a mechanical issue with the mouse's scroll wheel. Try connecting the mouse from your wife's computer and see if it goes away. Or your neighbor's.

PS. The older mice would sometimes collect lint on their bottom wheel and skid on the surface without turning the 'spindle'. The same response would occur as you tracked across a flat surface. Your problem is different but could be similar in that the wheel is not transmitting to the mouse itself. Quien sabe?

Thanks for the response Igor - that would be pretty standard troubleshooting and good advice.  But as I mentioned in the original post, I can use my mouse to vertically scroll in all other apps.  I have no less than 8 web pages open in chrome and NPN is the only one the exhibits this behavior.  Of course, that is not proof that it's NPN and it's still likely it's something with my particular setup.

In any event, it's still randomly occurring and I've resorted to viewing NPN in MS Edge.

It's not unusual for me to have a spinning a page lock up in a browser and go to another page and have free usage. If I wait long enough the locked up page catches up to what it's doing and becomes available again. I attribute this to a temporary lack of resources that eventually resolves itself. This is on the Mac. The intermittency is due to the load in the system at the time I'm trying to do a scroll. A Facebook scroll down a timeline repeated over and over rapidly will freeze the scrolling process and appear locked up until it resolves itself. Good luck.

If if you can scroll up and down on the same page in the same time with up and down keys but not the mouse then I still think it's the mouse.

There are many reasons a Web page can become unresponsive. They include:
  1. Network latency between your system and the site's server
  2. Long running Javascripts that load when the page is accessed, or when called by the site's code
  3. Poorly coded sites
  4. The browser itself is throwing errors
  5. Other sites on tabs that update at the same time
  6. Tasks running on your machine that use CPU and RAM at the same time as your browser.
I am not saying that NPN suffers from #'s 1--3, but one thing Lon can do when this happens, is to open a command prompt and run a 'traceroute' command and/or a 'ping' command using NPN's url or IP address. Doing so may give him an idea as to what is happening.

Well, the saga continues and I'm getting ticked off.  I've narrowed it down to a Chrome issue and have opened a topic in their Chrome help forum.  What I've done so far and figured.

1. I can reproduce the problem on other sites like NSN (blasphemy I know!) and my very own web page.  I'm fairly certain that pages with lots of images (caching...) will exhibit this issue.  I reproduce by quickly moving between pages, images, refreshes, etc., Within a minute or so the vertical scroll freezes, while all other functions of the page work
2. Moving off the photo website and then returning, clears the problem.  Refreshing browser page does not.
3. I've reinstalled mouse software and even bought a new mouse, no change.
4. I've reset to default and then completely removed and reinstalled Chrome. No change.
5. Installed Chrome's developer version, Canary, no change.
6. changed multiple settings within Chrome, to no avail.
7. Unable to reproduce in MS Edge

Thanks for your thoughts guys, but just to be clear, there are zero error messages, there is NO performance issues, hanging, spinning whirly-gigs, nothing.  I might go poke around the Event Viewer...

Oh well....

Lon, from the sounds of all the work to isolate the issue Chrome seems to be the only real problem. So, I would think asking them for help as you've done might resolve things in the end.
Have you ever entertained using Firefox? It too is color managed. I'm not sure MS Edge or previous MS stuff was ever color managed as I recall. I've used Firefox so long now I forget about the other options out there and wonder if any one is any better in the end on various issues. Keep us posted on the outcome.

Thanks Paul.  Being a creature of habit, I hadn't used FF in many years and after updates to W8.1 and now W10, I've haven't even installed  it.  That is, until now.  I went ahead and installed and so far have been unable to reproduce the problem.  And reproduced at least 3 times in Chrome.

I did post for help in one of the Chrome forums and got a fairly quick reply with suggestions.  No resolution yet, but I'll keep plugging away.

So for now, I'll play with FF a bit. I've imported the bookmarks, etc. and see how the test drive goes.

Keep y'all posted

Lon, the fact that you'd isolated to the browser early on at least gives you options until there is a repair response from Chrome. In the meantime if you continue with Firefox there are about three settings you should check in the browser settings. They're directly related to color management and can & do make a difference if an image is not already at sRGB.

This came up I think a year ago although I'd found it 4 or 5 years ago and made the corrections. However, at times when Firefox did upgrades all of a sudden I'd noticed odd looking images again. Usually saturation issues. Anyway, I would correct the settings again and all was well. When I say this came up a year ago it was here at NPN that folks had issues and I pointed it out in a thread back then and that was the fix for those folks at the time.

Anyway, this link will give you that information I posted back then and it is about 3 settings that might need attention in the beginning.
